Found this priceless video on "youtube" (thanks to "CroPETROforever") of when REAL MADRID ruled SPANISH BASKETBALL. That reign ( the 80s) was made even more glorious thanks to Croatian DRAZEN PETROVIC who was the finest European Basketball Player that I have ever seen in Spanish or European Basketball
The player left Real Madrid for the NBA (USA), being a poineer to open the way for other Europeans, starting a Portland & becoming a major star with the New Jersey Nets. The player tragically died in a car accident in Germany at the age of 28 leaving World Basketball orphan of a major talent that comes once every 20 years.
Here is Drazen Petrovic playing for Real Madrid against FC Barcelona in 1989 where he scored 42 points all by himself. This video is worth watching even if you don´t follow the game, as the man shows all his skills, his complete repertoire & all his "god given" talent. Just amazing & a fabolous Basketball player.

SPANISH FOOTBALL | ROUND 25 MONDAY NIGHT REUSLT | MALAGA 3 ALMERIA 1
The Spanish Football League ended Round 25 with the Monday Night LIGA match between MALAGA & ALMERIA with the victory going 3 - 1 to the home team. A desperate win for Malaga who are bottomed placed & need all the points they can muster up to attempt to get out & not get caught in the relegation zone.
It was Almeria that looked good early & was playing well, so good that they got themselves ahead via FEGHOULI in the 8th min. From here it was a hard fought game with plenty of yellow cards being shown.
Malaga got their deserved equalizer in the 52nd thanks to MARESCA. Then Almeria suffered a mental "short-circuit" with a red card to Ulloa in the 76th min & Malaga scored a second goal in the 78th min via RONDON. The Almeria "madness" continued with another red card in the 88th min to Luna. With Almeria down to 9 men on the field Malaga got their third goal in the 91st min via JUENMI to finish things of nicely for the home team & grab the 3 points.

SPANISH FOOTBALL LEADING GOAL SCORER - EL PICHICHI - AFTER ROUND 25 SEASON 2010-2011
Firstly , please accept my apologies for the Spanish Football League Leading Goal-scorer "widget" on the right hand side. I have contacted the Football website that they are not updating the goal scoring tally & they have not responded. The site in question - "Footbo.com" - has been losing its "attraction" for some months with some poor service that leaves you wondering why they are still operating. I will keep the widget up in hope that they react & begin updating again.
Until then allow me to inform you how the goal scoring situation is with La Liga. With 25 Rounds played of the Spanish League & 13 Round left to go, here is the Spanish Football - El Pichichi - Current Leading Goal -scoring tally:
Goal Scoring tally after Round 25 of LA LIGA 2010-2011:
1. Lionel Messi ( FC Barcelona) - 26 goals
2. Cristiano Ronaldo ( Real Madrid CF ) - 25 goals
3. David Villa ( FC Barcelona ) - 17 goals
4. Fernando Llorente ( At. Bilbao) - 14 goals
5. Pedro ( FC Barcelona ) - 13 goals
6. Rossi ( Villareal ) - 12 goals
7. Nilmar ( Villareal ) - 11 goals
8. Trezeguet ( Hercules ) - 10 goals
9. Caicedo ( Levante ) - 10 goals
There is a small "controversy" concerning Cristiano Ronaldo & his "official" goal figure. Some media give Ronaldo 25 goals while others give the Real Madrid player 24 goals. There is debate whether a goal that hit follow team-mate & defender Pepe should be given to Ronaldo or not. I have checked the LFP ( Liga de Futbol Profesional ) & they do not make any reference. Therefore I put 25 because the majority of the media checked gives this figure.
Will keep you updated if "widget" keeps "failing". Tweet

REAL MADRID | KAKA | PATIENCE IS WEARING THIN
Some say that KAKA came from AC MILAN with injury. Some say that the Brazilian had the 2010 World Cup as his main objective with Brazil & thus placed REAL MADRID as a secondary obligation. The last accusation is out of line & I personally doubt it 100 % , but here are some numbers from the ex FIFA World Player:
Mysterious pelvis injury that did not stop Kaka representing Brazil, then a knee injury post - World Cup that required surgery & kept the player on the sidelines 5 months. Not good return on investment from an economic perspective after costing Real Madrid 67M€.
It seems the patience of the Real Madrid fan base & at the higher levels of the Club is becoming thin as the Brazilian is a shadow of the player that put him on top of World Football with AC Milan.
His supporters have a strong argument in his defence; Kaka needs games to find fitness & rhythm after a mayor knee surgery. The reality is that after participating in a few games in attempt to regain lost form the player has been slow, very slow & non-effective. This Saturdays game against Deportivo saw a somewhat lost & out of pace Kaká that had to be substituted after Coach Mourinho´s frustration with the player was too much to handle.
Today's Spanish Sports paper "AS" writes that REAL MADRID WILL LISTEN to offers for Kaka & for next season. In fact the big news is from England, were the newspaper "The Daily Mirror" have written that CHELSEA FC has suggested an offer for Kaka with Drogba in the operation. From Italy there are softer rumours of interest from Inter Milan & AC Milan.
I for one think all this talk & rumour is premature & it could all be a "media campaign" to smarten up the player, promote some harder training within the Kaká & mentally build the Brazilian into action.
The conclusion & the main piece of news to bear in mind is how this post started: patience is beginning to wear itself thin at Real Madrid. Stay tuned!

ROUND 25 SPANISH FOOTBALL - LA LIGA SUNDAY GAMES RESULTS
SPANISH FOOTBALL action this Sunday via LA LIGA & its Round 25 with four matches scheduled. Here is a brief summary of events, the results & the scorers.
Caicedo scores for Levante |
LEVANTE settled their game with OSASUNA in 10 explosive minutes with a 2 -1 victory. The game reached its maximum height in the 41st min when PANDIANI put Osasuna ahead. Then Levante reacted in deadly fashion with an equalizer in the 44th min via BALLESTEROS & the second via CAICEDO in the 49th min that served as the winner.
Hercules - Getafe in La Liga action |
If something has characterised Round 25 of the Spanish League it has been the high results that have ended in a draw. The match between GETAFE & HERCULES finished 0 - 0 with the usual level of chances & opportunities to both sides that simply cancelled themselves out.
Racing - Villareal |
Mentioning drawn results, we saw another between RACING DE SANTANDER & VILLAREAL with a 2 - 2 scoreline. However, this match was different because it was a cliff-hanger & we saw how Racing allowed the victory to slip through their fingers.
Racing had the match fairly well under control up until the 60th min mark that included beforehand an early goal by ARIEL in the 3rd min. Villareal is a "never-give-up" squad & pulled an equalizer via MARCO RUBEN in the 66th min. But Racing was still sailing with their earlier momentum & scored a second via GIOVANI in the 68th min to go ahead. It then turned into an end to end game with Villareal goalie Diego Lopez putting in a great match to hold out Racing & in the 92nd min NILMAR scored the equalizer for Villareal.
Fantastic match of Spanish Football even if it was "another" draw.
Fernando Llorente scores for Bilbao |
Excellent match between ATHLETIC DE BILBAO & VALENCIA CF with the latter overrunning a tired home team who should have killed off Valencia earlier but let them off the hook. Bilbao lost 1 - 2 to Valencia because they did not finish off the business, with posts hit, lots of goal chances & a Valencia goalie Guaita who was inspired.
FERNANDO LLORENTE put Bilbao ahead in the 13th min & from here onwards had Valencia against the ropes with numerous goal opportunities.
Soldado for Valencia CF |
The game was fought hard in the midfield & there was the usual controversial referee decisions. However, Bilbao paid for their physical efforts & were "slowing" down in intensity which gave wings to Valencia. MATA equalized in the 70th min & JONAS put the visitors ahead in the 81st min which turned out to be the winner.
Valencia are showing that they are firm third place candidates in the Spanish League.

SPANISH FOOTBALL ROUND 25 SATURDAY GAMES RESULTS & SURPRISE
SPANISH FOOTBALL action tonight with five matches scheduled as part of Round 25 of the La Liga.
A 0 - 0 draw result between REAL SPORTING DE GIJON & REAL ZARAGOZA with both teams taking a point each. Not much to really add here at all.
Great game between ATLETICO DE MADRID & SEVILLA FC with a 2 -2 draw. It was end to end stuff with the home side having to fight back everytime the visitors got ahead. Sevilla forward NEGREDO put his team ahead in the 40th min to see Atletico youngster KOKE equalize in the 47th min. The Sevilla player RAKITIC returned his team to the lead in the 66th min to see Atletico midielder REYES equalize & "save the day" for the home team.
RCD ESPANYOL played a high scoring match against REAL SOCIEDAD with a final 4 - 1 result for the home side. The scorers for Espanyol were Deportivo player ESTRADA with an own goal in the 42nd min, SERGIO GARCIA in the 54th min, CALLEJON in the 81st min & JAVI MARQUEZ in the 91st min. Deportivo player ESTRADA "fixed things" with the only goal for Real Sociedad in the 44th min.
REAL MALLORCA lost to FC BARCELONA 0 - 3 in 30 mins of power play. The action all started in the 37th min when MESSI opened things, followed by DAVID VILLA with a goal in the 56th min & a "cracker" by PEDRO in the 66th min.
DEPORTIVO held out REAL MADRID all night to finish their match with a 0 - 0 draw. A moral breaking result for Madrid who now finds itself again chasing FC Barcelona with a 7 point deficit. This gap makes it extremely dificult for Real Madrid to have any real aspirations for this seasons LIGA title.
Real Madrid hit posts & found a grand Deportivo goalkeeper ARANZUBIA who stopped eveything thrown at him tonight. FC Barcelona will be having a couple of celebration beers to the Deportivo health who simply did their job.

ATLETICO DE MADRID MAKES 18M€ OFFER FOR LAMEAL OF RIVER PLATE ?
ATLETICO DE MADRID is a fascinating Club. While there is a debate to whether the Clubs debt is +700€ o +182M€ ( a big difference) an issue that has the Club in courts against those who published the first, the Spanish Football Club is reported from Argentina to have made a 18M€ offer to RIVER PLATE for their "creative" midfielder LAMELA.
The 19 year old is also said by media to being followed by AC Milan & Benfica. While in Argentina River Plate officials confirm that offer, here in Spain Atletico only confirms the interest & NOT the offer. Understandable if your going to court over a "astronomical" debt issue. Don´t you think? Tweet

REAL MADRID FOLLOWING JAVI MARQUEZ OF RCD ESPANYOL ?
According to Spanish Sports paper "AS", REAL MADRID is following RCD ESPANYOL player JAVI MARQUEZ. Apparently the player left a "glowing" impression on Real Madrid Coach José Mourinho last time both teams played & he has asked his "men" to follow the Espanyol player.
The 24 year old has many Clubs interested, from Valencia to Clubs in the English Premier League. His asset is a talented left foot which is an authentic cannon , his midfield work & sacrifice.
Early days & no one can read more beyond that Real Madrid is following Marquez, as others are as well. However, thought you may be interested to know & place Javi Marquez in your list of players to keep an eye on theses coming weeks & months. Tweet

VILLAREAL 2 NAPOLES 1 | VILLAREAL GO THROUGH TO KEEP THE SPANISH FLAG FLYING
Fantastic news for Spanish Football as VILLAREAL won 2 - 1 Italian Club NAPOLES to go on in the EUROPA LEAGUE competition. It was never going to be easy & the Italians put up a good game & fight but were overcome by a more determined & better Villareal.
The Italian team via TAMSIK scored first in the 16th min to make us all wonder if the Spanish team could pull things off to their favour. But they buried our doubts & fears as NILMAR equalized in the 42nd min & ROSSI scored a second in the 46th min of extra time in the first half.
Napoles hit the post twice in the second half as they fought to turn things around but failed in their heroic attempt, something that one has to give them merit.
Villareal eliminate Napoles & now face the difficult German Club Bayern Leverkusen. Tweet

OPORTO 0 SEVILLA 1 | SEVILLA FC ELIMINATED FROM THE EUROPA LEAGUE
SEVILLA FC was always going to find things very difficult at Portugal after losing 1 - 2 in the 1º leg of their EUROPA LEAGUE clash with OPORTO. Tonight they managed to win the 2º leg match against Oporto 0 - 1 but was eliminated. The away leg result was not enough for the Spanish Club & leave the competition with their heads high although that won´t matter much now with the elimination so fresh & recent.
It was a very even & hard battled match which saw the only goal by Sevilla FC player LUIS FABIANO arrive in the 71st min. Oporto player Pereira received a red card in the 73rd min & then Sevilla defender Alexis received a red card in the 78th . With 10 men each the game was open with spaces & it was end to end stuff with Sevilla having chances to score more goals. Said this, Sevilla goalkeeper Javi Varas had lots of work to do stopping Oporto on various occasions.
A balanced game with the damage really done on Sevilla in the 1º leg game & a result that was extremely difficult to turn around.

OLYMPIQUE LYON 1 REAL MADRID 1 | CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 1º ST LEG RESULT
REAL MADRID managed to leave Lyon with a valuable 1 - 1 draw in their 1º leg clash with French Club OLYMPIQUE LYON in CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. Finally the Spanish side manage to score a goal at Lyon & it was a Frenchman from Lyon that had to break the "bad luck" spell.
The first half goes to Lyon as they suffocated Real Madrid with pressure Football, with a very disciplined & tactical set up were they worked in favour of their counter-attack strategy. Real Madrid lost the ball under the intense pressure in midfield numerous times & Lyon took the opportunity to attack & give the Real defence plenty of work. It was frustrating for Real Madrid as they could not get their game together & the sensation was not good at all at the end of the 45 minutes.
Real Madrid Coach Mourinho must have said something in the dressing rooms as Real Madrid started the second half revved up & was in control with two posts ( Ronaldo with free-lick & Ramos with a header) early on. In the 62rd min the referee did not call a clear penalty to Madrid after Gourcuff hand-balled a Ronaldo free-kick in the area. Then Adebayor was substituted for KARIM BENZEMA who a minute later in the 64th did a "one-two" play with Ozil & scored!
Real Madrid strengthen its midfield with Lass coming on & put on Marcelo, but Lyon pushed into another gear attempting to find the equalizer. It came in the 83rd min when a free kick found a Cris header that placed the ball in front of GOMIS who tapped the ball pass Casillas.
From this point & until the end of the match it was end to end stuff that was dangerous for both side & both sighed relief with the final whistle. Both live to "fight" another day & that day will be at the "Santiago Bernabeu" Stadium in Madrid with Real having a sight advantage. Promises to be a "cracker" of a 2º leg return game as the final result is still open. Tweet

ARSENAL FC SIGNS JON TORAL 16 YEAR OLD FC BARCELONA PEARL
There was a very heated arguement last week in the VIP Boxes of the "Emirates Stadium" (London) between FC BARCELONA President Sandro Rosell & ARSENAL FC Chief Executive Ivan Gazdis before the Champions League match between both Clubs. The cause of the anger was 16 year old FC BARCELONA junior midfield player JON MIQUEL TORAL HARPER
ARSENAL FC has signed the player for next season & this has brought back memories of Cesc Fabregas when Arsenal also signed the player under similiar circumstances. FC Barcelona are not happy at all at losing their "pearl" & President Rosell let known to Mr. Gazdis that the Arsenal methods & manoeuvring at not ethical ways.
But lets not put passion in this story & gets some facts in here. The mother of Toral is English & the boy has a strong tie with the country & the culture. Toral was happy to sign as he asked Coach Guardiola what plans he had & if he had a place in the Barça "structure" in coming years. Added to this, one can safely assume that Barça was not "quick" enough to react & thus lost out to a much better offer for Toral.
Barça will only receive 350.000€ for a player that many see as a new "Frank Lampard" & a real talent. What "hurts" Barcelona is to see in the coming years Toral becoming a World Class player, just like Cesc Fabregas, & being reminded that the boy was born & raised at Barça.
Lastly, the manager of Toral is the brother of current Barça Coach Guardiola. Tweet

Real Sociedad could have got another when Xabi Prieto hit the post in the 70th min.

OBAMA AT ATLETICO DE MADRID | FUTURE PROMISE
Did you know ATLETICO DE MADRID has OBAMA? No, not US President Barack Obama, but SALOMON BARACK ( 04.02.2000) a young Football player from African country Equatorial Guinea, a Spanish speaking nation which was an ex-Spanish colony.
The 11 year old kid is a goal scoring machine & is looking like heading towards bigger things after Atletico de Madrid defeated Real Madrid 3 - 5 yesterday big "derby" at the Real Madrid Valdebebas ground. Obama scored FOUR, but he also scored four in their first meeting at Atletico at the start of the season.
The young man gets into the 40+ figures for a season & thus we must note the name & see how this talent develops in the coming years.
I hope that Atletico de Madrid can hold onto the youngster & assure a future promise for the Club. Let me remind you that RAUL GONZALEZ ( ex Real Madrid ) also started at Atletico as a youngster & ended up at Real Madrid to be a World Footabll Legend. The same thing occured with CESS C FABREGAS when at FC Barcelona & Arsenal FC came & took him to London.
Who knows, with Obama at Atletico de Madrid & playing in the forward position in 10 years we may win Real Madrid....Yes, We Can :O) Tweet

SPANISH FOOTBALL - LA LIGA | ROUND 24 SUNDAY GAMES RESULTS
SPANISH FOOTBALL action this Sunday with six matches on the calendar for Round 24 of the Spanish League - La Liga. Lets examine the games with a brief summary of results & the scorers.
Villareal let slip three points |
VILLAREAL drew with bottom placed MALAGA 1 - 1 & allowed the three points to slip through their fingers. Villareal played much better but paid dearly for not transforming their chances into goal. Villareal got ahead in the 35th min via MARCOS RUBEN & controlled the game until Malaga punished with an opportunity that S.FERNANDEZ converted into the equalizer in the 82nd min.
Almeria scored their goal via Piatti |
Same scenario as the above match with ALMERIA letting slip the victory in the last moment against DEPORTIVO with a 1 - 1 result. PIATTI put Almeria ahead in the 48th min & just when it looked like a home team victory Deportivo player & GOALKEEPER ARANZUNBIA scored the equalizer in the 95th min!
Osasuna was the Spanish Football surprise |
OSASUNA with new debut Coach Mendilibar surprised everyone & RCD ESPANYOL with a 4 - 0 victory that should help the lower placed team fight to avoid the relegation zone. The goals came from NEKO in the 13th min, NEKOUNAM in the 35th min, LOLO in the 80th min & SORIANO in the 88th min. Espanyol Coach Pochettino was not a happy man at the end of the game.
Racing scores their winner |
GETAFE are not having a good run lately & luck is not on their side after losing 0 - 1 to RACING DE SANTANDER & in the last moments. The winning goal came via Racing player PINILLOS in the 88th min via a penalty.
Sevilla Fc - Hercules |
SEVILLA FC won a very worked & suffered clash against HERCULES 1 - 0. Sevilla started strong with shots at the bar by Negredo & lots of chances. The home side was rewarded for their efforts when new player ( ex-Schalke 04) RAKITIC scored in the 21st min.
From here Hercules began to play better & improve as time went on. The Sevilla FC goalkeeper began to work harder & needed to make some excellent saves to stop the visitors scoring. Towards the end of the match things had changed & it was Hercules who had Sevilla on the ropes. But their "last attack of the cavalry" was too late & Sevilla grabbed the three points.
Lionel Messi |
FC BARCELONA were pushed &they suffered in their 2 - 1 victory over ATHLETIC DE BILBAO; thus Barça maintain their 5 point gap with 2º placed Real Madrid.
The engine room for both sides was the midfield tonight which was for the "big boys" as it was rough & tough in the centre. Barça displayed all its habitual pressure play & their continual attacking method while Bilbao demonstrated it famous aggression, defending & counter-attacks.
Before going further magnificent goalkeeping saves on both sides, with one that could have really effected the final result when Barça goalie Pinto ( in for injuried Valdes) saved a Fernando Llorente header & ball with goal painted on it in the first half.
Being that as it was, DAVID VILLA scored first in the 3rd min in a clear off-side (Dani Alves) that surprised Bilbao which slowly composed themselves to improve their game as the match went on to equal things & make Barça work hard. Barça defender DANI ALVES was a real "pain in the ass" all night for Bilbao & was to be vital later on for his team.
The second half saw an early penalty when Barça midfielder Busquets fouled Bilbao forward FERNANDO LLORENTE in the 49th min to which IRAOLA converted to goal & equalized. Bilbao then concentrated on defending & attempt the odd counter- attcak , but with Barça advancing in waves Dani Alves passed a magic ball & found LIONEL MESSI who clicked into the net for the second team goal & the winner right in the 77th min. There was a clear penalty on Messi not called but Barça won the game & that should take some steam off the issue.
The Messi goal broke the Bilbao spirits after they had put in an enormous & valient effort to attempt to keep Barça out & at least go home with a draw that finally was´nt. The end result, a Barça win with a sigh of relief & plenty of hard work.

SPANISH FOOTBALL - LIGA RESULTS | ROUND 24 SATURDAY GAMES
Three games celebrated tonight as part of Round 24 of Spanish Football League - La Liga. Lets take a brief look at events, the results & the scorers in tonight's matches.
Valencia CF - Sporting Gijon |
VALENCIA CF could not manage to break the REAL SPORTING DE GIJON defensive wall & finished with a 0 - 0 draw. Sporting showed that their draw with FC Barcelona last week was not a fluke & planted a serious match that cancelled out totally all of Valencia CF efforts to play positive & attacking Football. Null match for the home team & impressive by Sporting
Benzema scores first Real Madrid |
REAL MADRID won LEVANTE 2 - 0 with all the damage done in the first half. The three points puts Madrid just 2 points behind FC Barcelona who play tomorrow & transfers some pressure on them to win & mantain the current 5 point gap on the ladder.
KARIM BENZEMA started ahaed of Abedayor & scored in the 6th min after some magic from Di Maria who set up the Frechmen. Real Madrid was in full control & created many chances with CARVALHO scoring the second from a Cristiano Ronaldo assist in the 40th min
Carvalho scores for Real Madrid |
The second half Real Madrid lifted the foot of the accelerator perhaps thinking in Champions League match next week , but kept on creating & missed more chances at goal - especially Ronaldo - thanks to some good work from the Levante goalkeeper. The end result was a comfortable victory & the three points in a "one way street" match called Madrid.
By the way, this victory gives Coach José Mourinho an incredible record. The man hasn´t been defeated in a "home" game in 9 years!
Sergio Aguero scores for Atletico de Madrid |
A huge sigh of relief for ATLETICO DE MADRID fans after the Club defeated REAL ZARAGOZA away 0 - 1. The question is, did Atletico de Madrid play well or Real Zaragoza play badly? It was an even & open match with plenty of attacking & goal chances which Atletico missed as it has been happening the last few weeks.
The second half was the same with misses & frustration until SERGIO AGUERO did his individual "party piece" taking on defenders & scoring in the 65th min. However, Zaragoza nearly equalized in the last moments hitting the bar-post twice!
Real Zaragoza will be disappointed & Atletico will take the three points by any means available at this stage.

ATLETICO DE MADRID | PINOCCHIO PART II | A SUSPICION
The 9th of February I posted an article here on ATLETICO DE MADRID & the rumours about the possible selling of SERGIO AGUERO &/or DIEGO FORLAN at the end of the season. I titled the post "ATLETICO DE MADRID | SERGIO AGUERO | PINOCCHIO", basically saying I did not believe a word from Atletico Directives that they would not sell under any circumstances Aguero & finished with Forlan as already a done deal.
Well nine days later we read that an unhappy fan-base section & now lobby at the Club, the called "Asociasion de Señales de Humo" ( Smoke signs Association), hired the prestigious Spanish law firm "Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo" to do a financial revision of the Clubs balance sheet. The final report says there is a massive 782M€ debt at the Club. This raises a few questions in my mind?
Forlan & Aguero |
Well nine days later we read that an unhappy fan-base section & now lobby at the Club, the called "Asociasion de Señales de Humo" ( Smoke signs Association), hired the prestigious Spanish law firm "Cremades & Calvo-Sotelo" to do a financial revision of the Clubs balance sheet. The final report says there is a massive 782M€ debt at the Club. This raises a few questions in my mind?
- Why was Director General Gil Marin ( the real owner) voted & awarded by his World Football peers "the Best Football Business Manager of the Year 2010" ? I am dumb-founded!
- Where is the f#@king money? I can only guess, with so many signings that went no where at the Club...
& lastly, how is this for an interesting angle. Is this the beginning of a "propaganda" campaign to "soften" up the "hardcore" fans for a SERGIO AGUERO & DIEGO FORLAN end of season sale?
What better excuse & strategy than to argue that the entity needs the money from the transfers to survive!
Leave you to decide if I am just paranoid.

VILLAREAL OK SEVILLA FC KO | EUROPA LEAGUE GAMES RESULTS
Two Spanish Football Clubs had EUROPA LEAGUE - last 16 team stage - duties tonight with mixed results. Here is a brief summary with results & the scorers.
A fiercely competitive & intense match for VILLAREAL who played 2º placed Italian Serie A team NAPOLES at Italy. The game was balanced all night & it ended in a 0 - 0 draw result after the Spaniards cancelled out the Italian aggresive attacking play. It felt like a victory for Villareal which will now play Napoles on home turf & under more favourable conditions.
SEVILLA FC were punished because they did not finish off their multiple chances at goal & because OPORTO managed to nail the limited opportunities handed to them tonight at Sevilla. I say handed because the second Oporto goal - & the winner - was a Sevilla defensive mistake that cancelled out all their excellent work in the second half.
It was a great game & very open with two sides taking things very seriously with some "over the top" aggression that gave sparks to the match. It was Oporto who scored first via ROLANDO in the 58th min when he got onto a pass-free-kick. Sevilla then played their best Football after missing all night multiple chances & finally managed to nail one for the equalizer via KANOUTE with a classic text book header in the 65th min. However, when Sevilla was at its best a defensive mistake allowed Oporto player GUARIN in at the 84th min mark to score the winner. Cruel punishment & Sevilla will be kicking themselves for the misses & lapses.
Now the Spanish side travels to "hostile turf" at Oporto who will be difficult - but not impossible - to defeat. Tweet

ARSENAL 2 FC BARCELONA 1 | 1st LEG CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RESULT
Magnificent CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - last 16 teams stage - 1º leg clash between ARSENAL FC & FC BARCELONA that gave all the spectators a wonderful 90 mins of World Class Football. The final result was 2 - 1 victory to Arsenal that gives them the comfort to travel to Barcelona for the 2º leg match although Barça take a valuable away goal that could end up being vital.
Arsenal started on fire & Barça goalie Valdes needed to do a "miracle" save early. However, Barça settled & dominated completely the midfield & made Arsenal run behind them as the Spanish team made the home side dance. Eventually the Barça goal had to come & DAVID VILLA slipped a ball under the Arsenal goalkeeper from a Messi pass that opened up proceedings in the 25th min. From here two factors to note 1) Barça could have opened up more the scoreline but missed their chances & they would pay later 2) Arsenal looked sloppy & inaccurate in their final play that they would fix later in the game.
The second half started as the first with a fiery Arsenal that was watered down by Barça who took control & created chances. Then the moment of the whole match when Barça Coach Guardiola substituted forward David Villa for defensive midfielder Keita in the 68th min. In my opinion, Guardiola sent our a "message" that Barça would be content with a 0 - 1 victory, to which this stimulated Arsenal to risk & go all out for the victory. The "Old Fox" Arsenal Coach Wenger then reacted with "double" offensive power change putting on Bendner & Arshavin. With Barça missing Villa upfront & Arsenal attacking the equalizer came via VAN PERSIE when he surprised on via the protected post Barça goalie Valdes in the 77th min.
Barça was rattled as they could contain the Arsenal offensive play & were surprised in a rapid counter-attack that ARSHAVIN finished in majestic style in the 83rd min to score the second for Arsenal. Barça as true Champions reacted & nearly managed to equalize in the last minutes via Alves but it was not meant to be.
Great victory for Arsenal that should lift their confidence for the away clash & wonderful strategy by Wenger who "slipped one in " on Guardiola that will be remember. Said this, FC Barcelona with their hurt pride will be more dangerous than ever on the home turf, which assures a wonderful away leg match for all Football lovers.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE RESULT 1st LEG | VALENCIA CF 1 SCHALKE 04 1
The EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE competition began again tonight with the last 16 team stage with Spanish Football Club VALENCIA CF hosting German Team SCHALKE 04 in their 1º leg match. The final result was a 1 - 1 draw after an intense, rapid & chances filled game of soccer.
The first half was basically all Valencia CF dominanting & creating chances. One of those chances turned into goal when Aduriz crossed into the path of SOLDADO who scored in the 16th min. The Germans created a few chances but Valencia kept them under control.
The second half was another story as Valencia looked tired from their first half efforts & the defence looked wobbly. Valencia Goalkeeper Guaita was stopping more & more German shots until ex-Real Madrid player RAUL GONZALEZ did his "party-trick" in the box to leave his defender & score the equalizer. The goal left the stadium cold with disbelief as Schalke 04 had come back & taken control of proceeding. Things remained that same until the end & Schalke go home with a great result that forces Valencia to go all out in the 2º leg.
Staying with the "incredible" RAUL, he overtakes German legend Gerd Muller with his goal tonight as the "Hightest Goal scorer in European Competitions" with now 70 goals in 142 European games. Gerd Muller had the record until tonight with 69 goals in 77 games.

RONALDO RETIRES FROM FOOTBALL | TIME TO SAY GOODBYE
Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima, RONALDO, has announced his retirement from Football at the age of 34 years of age. The players body just instead the same & as he himself says, the body does not want to do what the mind thinks. According to Spanish media the player will give his last press conference this afternoon (Sp.Time) to communicate the news. Arguably the Best Number Nine that Football has seen ( with permission from Alfredo Di Stefano) at least in "Modern Times" the player has notched up:
Ronaldo played in Cruzeiro, PSV, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, AC Milan & Corinthians
Spanish Football had the privilege of having Ronaldo twice in the Spanish League, firstly with FC BARCELONA when he arrived in 1996 for a short but explosive spell & secondly with REAL MADRID when he arrived in 2002. You can see all the facts & figures in the Wikipedia
Ronaldo will be remember for his incredible vertical & front-on attacks at defenders which left them behind with his almost "video games" dribbling skills. A goal-scoring machine with deadly pin piont accuracy & precision the player earned the name "The Phenomenon". An appropriate term as he looked like a "Hurricane" or a "Tsunami" when he got the ball midfield & raced towards goal: unstoppable.
Football will miss Ronaldo, & from here I would only like to say THANK YOU! I am sure we will be seeing Ronaldo still associated with Football in some capacity as the man has the Sport in his DNA.
