IKER CASILLAS - XAVI HERNANDEZ WIN "PREMIO PRINCIPE DE ASTURIAS"

The "Premio Principe de Asturias" , is the equivalent of the "Nobel Prize" for Spanish speaking Nations. There are many categories - Social Sciences, Medicine, Literatura, Arts  etc - & it is not shut to only Spanish speaking persons or organizations, as many non-Spaniards have been awarded like Woody Allen, Norman Foster, Google, Al Gore, Paul Krugman & Bob Dylan, just to mention a few.

This year the "Sports Award" has being handed  to Spanish Football players IKER CASILLAS & XAVI HERNANDEZ for their contribution to Sport, Spanish Football History & for being exemplary models for the youth.  These two players have been pivotal in the success of the Spanish National Football Team in winning back to back European Titles & the first ever FIFA World Cup Title. Apart from this they symbolize an off the field "friendship" & Sportsmanship that  sets  an example to all even though both represent & defend different Club colours locally in which the rivalry has been so fierce the last couple of years that it has bordered on violence

Casillas & Xavi maintain a personal & professional relationship since their youth years representing Spain in all levels that has endured & has been maintain against all external "influences" up till now.  The Award prizes their social labours & work .
The "Premios Principe de Asturias" selection committee gave both as "joint-winners" over the other also worthy candidate the "International  Paralympic Commitee".

Congratulations to both, as they win more than  just a personal prize, they also accept the Award in the name of Spanish Football & perhaps a never to be repeated generation of Spanish Football players.

SPANISH FOOTBALL | MALAGA FC INTO CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Historical. Spanish Football Club MALAGA has qualified itself for the first time in its History for the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE. The first round score of 2 - 0 was sufficient for Malaga after drawing tonight 0 - 0 away in the 2º leg return match to Greek Club PANATHINAIKOS.

The 2º leg was relatively dominated from start to finish by the Spaniards with the Greeks having some timid opportunities that they could not capitalise.

Malaga will be in one of the "dishes" in next Friday´s Champions League Group draw ceremony in Monaco, along with Real Madrid, FC Barcelona & Valencia CF. Malaga reaches the "big time", & is well deserved at that for an excellent job & performance considering the difficult last months at the Club with internal financial issues.

Congratulations Malaga!

SPANISH FOOTBALL HISTORY | FC BARCELONA CLOSES IN ON REAL MADRID IN OVERALL TITLES

bSpanish Sports daily “Marca” makes an interesting observation today in its online edition; that FC BARECLONA is close to overtaking REAL MADRID in overall historical titles. With yesterdays Spanish Super Cup title FC Barcelona has 70 historical total titles as compared with 72 that belong to Real Madrid.

Here below is a very good descriptive diagram taken from the mentioned source that depicts perfectly the situation. As you can see the reign of Real Madrid over SPANISH FOOTBALL may soon be a thing of the past if Barça continue to accumulate titles.

HISTORY & LEGENDS OF REAL MADRID CF - A SHORT VIDEO

Found this interesting video, a short documentary of the Legends of REAL
MADRID CF
. It´s in English & follows a numerical order of past & current
greats who have played at the Club. Interesting viewing for all the Real SFS
readers throughout the global, which are many.

Enjoy!

SFS FLASHBACKS - 1974: REAL MADRID 0 - FC BARCELONA 5

Curiously 35 years ago, REAL MADRID played FC BARCELONA in
one of the two classic derby’s of the 1973/1974 Spanish League season,
in which Barça was proclaimed Champion. But what’s historical is that
in this particular game Barcelona handed a 0-5 thrashing to Real Madrid
in there own home ground, the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. Here are
the team lineups & scorers for this historic clash - 17.02.1974:

R. Madrid: Garcia Remon, Morgado, Benito, Zoco, Rubinan, Pirri,
Netzer, Velazquez, Aguilar (Santillana), Amancio, Macanas.

FC Barcelona: Mora, Rifé, Costas, De la Cruz, Torres, Juan Carlos,
Rexach, Asensi, Johan Cruyff, Hugo Cholo Sotil, Marcial (Tome).

Goals: Asensi 2, Cruyff 1, Juan Carlos 1, Sotil 1

As you can see Barça had a team line up that included Cruyff that was
to become later legendary:

CYCLING: ALBERTO CONTADOR WINS VUELTA & MAKES HISTORY

Spanish cyclist ALBERTO CONTADOR won the "LA VUELTA DE
ESPAÑA
" cycling Tour, & by doing so got into the history books as

the 5ºth rider in Cycling History to have won the "3 Great Races":
"Giro di Italia, Tour de France & La Vuelta..." Alberto Contador joins

the leyendas Merckx, Anquetil, Hinault & Gimondi & still is young
enough to give us more victories in the future.

The top 3 places in the General classification has finished thus:
1. Contador 80.40,23; 2. Leiphieme ,46; 3. C.Sastre 04,12

Increible year for Spanish cycling as Carlos Sastre who finished 3ºplace

in "La Vuelta...2008" won this years "Tour De France", & Contador
won this
years "Giro di Italia" & "La Vuelta ...2008".

ATHLETIC DE BILBAO APPROVE PUBLICITY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY

The market dominates & crushes through tradition. Spanish
Club ATHLETIC DE BILBAO "surprised" many & angered the

veterans when they revealed publicity on their team shirts for
the first time in its 110 years of history in front of 8000 fans today
in the teams presentation. Below we can see how President of the
Club Macua (left) holds the shirt to media.

The Club is experiencing economic difficulties & has had to
resort to publicity to help out the finances. The deal is a 3 year
contract & 7M€. Modernity meets tradition, a clash that has given
the victory to the former: progress over the past.
