UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL RESULTS WEDNESDAY GROUP GAMES

UEFA Champions League continued tonight with another two Spanish Football Clubs in action. Here are tonights final results with all the goalscorers.

Champions League 2014

FC Barcelona travelled to Amsterdam to meet Ajax for their Group F match. Important game for Barça to secure the Group & find their lost Football after heavy criticism back home for their recent losses in Liga. Coach Luis Enrique started with Suarez, Xavi, Bartra & Rakitic, but left out (on the bench) Gerard Pique, thus accentuating the speculated problem with the player.

Barça won 0 - 2 & Ajax had their chances up until the 71st min when they lost Veltman to a red card. Before this it was an intense game with end to end Football with Ajax having their best moments in the 1ºst half - they even claimed two penalties not called. However, Ajax failed to convert their worked opportunities & they later paid for it dearly. FC Barcelona solved their situation with the class of their players & Messi scored first in the 35th min & again later in the 76th min when Ajax were with 10 men, tired from their efforts & discontent for missing so much chances.

FC Barcelona won but is not shining as we have been accustomed, perhaps the victory can shake off criticism & lessen the pressure of past days. The last note is that Messi joins Raul as the Historical maximum goalscorer of Champions League with 71 goals.

Champions League 2014

Athletic Club Bilbao said goodbye to Champions League after losing their Group H game to Porto 0 - 2. The Portuguese team deserved the win as they were the better side tonight on all levels. Porto missed a penalty when Martinez Jackson hit the bar in the 42nd min. But Jackson made up for his mistake scoring to the 56th min , to which later Brahimi scored the second for Porto in the 75th min.

Disappointing end for Bilbao in Champions which will go into the Europa League after the Champions League Group game stage.

SPANISH FOOTBALL TEAMS | UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TUESDAY NIGHT FINAL RESULTS

Bad night for the two Spanish Football Clubs with UEFA Chaampions League duties tonight. Here are the final results along with all the goalscorers.

PSG-FC BARCELONA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Paris St Germain hosted FC Barcelona for their Group F match & won 3 - 2 in a fantastic game of European Football. Barça lost its goal-defensive "virginity" this season receiving 3 goals & notching up its first official defeat. Barça Coach Luis Enrique started with the following players:

Ter Stegen; Alves, Mascherano, Mathieu, Alba; Busquets, Rakitic, Iniesta; Pedro, Messi & Neymar

As you can see goalie Claudio Bravo & Gerard Pique were on the bench, with some Football observers already out of the box with criticisms concerning the continual line-up changes that are being applied game after game.

In any case, it was a relatively even & a see-saw match. PSG put in a marvellous effort in the midfield with Motta shining & Lucas Moura outstanding. On the other hand Barça made too many mistakes tonight with their passing & continual loss of balls in the midfield which cost them dearly in the end. Barça defender Dani Alves will be blamed tonight for a poor performance, while his defending team-mates - Mascherano, Mathieu & Alba - will also receive some local flack for their disorganization. Even the Barça goalie tonight Ter Stegen will be analysed for his part - or non part - in the second PSG goal .

The match goals came in the following order:
  • David Luiz 10th min, 1 - 0
  • Messi 12th min , 1 - 1
  • Verratti 27th min, 2 - 1
  • Matuidi 52nd min , 3 - 1
  • Neymar 56th min, 3 - 2
It was however admirable to see how Barça reacted almost immediately to pull the score back each time, but the French were better organized & more focused on what needed to be done.

Barça came real close to equalizing in the final part of the match with PSG defender Marquinhos blocking a Jordi Alba shot, young Munir hitting the post & Sandro missing a clear opportunity.

Good & deserved victory for PSG & Barça to fly home to the expected criticisms that make the Football circus go round.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Disaster for Athletic Club Bilbao losing 2 - 1 to Bate Borisov in their Group H game. The loss puts things uphill for Bilbao to be able to qualify out of the Group phase.

The starting 11 for Bilbao was:

Iraizoz; Iraola, San José, Laporte, Balenziaga; Iturraspe, Beñat, Rico; Ibai, Muniain & Aduriz.

Notable absences were De Marcos & Susaeta who were left on the bench. Here too Bilbao Coach Valverde - as with FC Barcelona Coach Luis Enrique - will receive local criticisms & flake over the line-up.

However, Bilbao played badly & was chaotic. Bate scored two goal in the first half, Polyakov in the 19th min & Kaarnitskiy in the 41st min. Too many midfield mistakes from Bilbao, especially Iturraspe who had terrible game. The Bilbao 41st min goal from Aduriz gave some hope but the Spanish Team failed to convert their gained opportunities in the second half.

Tomorrow more UEFA Champions League action with Spanish Football Clubs Real Madrid & Atletico de Madrid in action.

ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO 1 - NAPOLI 1 | CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 1º ST LEG PRELIMINARY

Spanish Football Club Athletic Club Bilbao managed a suffered 1 -1 draw against Napoli in the 1ºst leg of the Champions League preliminary. Spanish & Bilbao midfielder Muniain put his team ahead first in the 41st min, while Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain equalized in the 69th min. From this moment until the end of the match Napoli took control & could have increased their advantage, especially in the final minutes, had Bilbao goalie Gorka Iraizoz not made several outstanding saves.

UEFA Champions League Preliminary

Napoli travels next week to "San Mames" (Bilbao, Spain) for the 2º leg return match were Bilbao has the home & a goal advantage. However, the tie is wide open & promises to be a match not to miss.

SPANISH FOOTBALL - ROUND 25 FRIDAY RESULT | AT.BILBAO 1 - REAL SOCIEDAD 3

Round 25 of the Spanish League kicked -off with the habitual Friday Night match. A special game as it was the anticipated & big "Basque Region" derby between Athletic Club Bilbao & Real Sociedad ( city of San Sebastian ). This "derby" is always special & even more when played at Bilbao in the "Cathedral of Spanish Football" the "San Mames Stadium". The followers of both sides get on well & celebrate jointly in the streets before the match, but both Clubs & their fans are people with pride & the loser feels the pinch. Both teams wish to avoid a loss.

Soccer Spain

The end result was a 1 - 3 victory to Real Sociedad, a very felt loss for Bilbao on their "sacred" turf & with a convincing scoreline. What hurts more the losers is that this is the last derby in this ground before moving next season to the new Stadium  The last anticipated Bilbao hurray on their century long home ground turned sour.

But there is a reason for the Real Sociedad victory, they are simple better this season & the in Euro positions on the Spanish League ladder while Bilbao is having a very poor & inconsistent season full of internal problems on & off the field.

Bilbao got ahead first in the 19 th min with Ibai, but their Football glory & moment would soon end when Real Sociedad equalized via Griezmann in the 33 rd min. From here onwards the visitors took over & went ahead thanks to Aguirretxe in the 66th min & Mexican Carlos Vela got the third in the 76th min.

What made it even more sweet for Real Sociedad is that they have not won in "San Mames" for the last 12 years, & tonight they did in the night of derby farewells from the mythical home ground of Bilbao. Party poopers indeed.

FC BARCELONA | BILBAO ANDER HERRERA AN OPTION?

ANDER HERRERA is a 23 year old Spanish International & ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO midfielder that is destined for big things. Character, leadership & solid work in the centre of the field makes the youngster a very attractive asset to have on any team. The Bilbao player is loyal to his Club, but his close circle also knows that if he is to grow into what his talent needs for full flowering that Bilbao is not the Club, that he will need to go to one of the "Big Ones".

Ander Herrera has come into the spotlight these days after a very public lunch occurred between Bilbao Coach Bielsa & FC BARCELONA Football Director Andoni Zubizarreta ( ex-Real Madrid General Manager Jorge Valdano was also present ). The immediate speculation was that Barcelona may have been sounding out Bielsa to Coach the Catalan Club. The illness to current Coach Vilanova is more serious than first thought & he is currently in New York ( USA ) undergoing treatment. Barcelona could be putting in place "Plan B" just in case with Bielsa.

However, during the mentioned lunch the FC Barcelona Football Director asked Bielsa about ANDER HERRERA, apart from another team-mate & Spanish promise IKER MUNIAIN. Spanish Football observers interpret this many ways but the most obvious is a possible interest from Barcelona for Herrera.  A Club of this dimension would be ideal for the player in order to grow into the Football player we all know he can be.

Stay tuned!

ARSENAL FC EYES ATHLETIC CLUB FERNANDO LLORENTE ?

Spanish International & ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO forward FERNANDO LLORENTE will be a "free agent" as of the 1 st of January 2013. That is he will be free to chosen the Club that he wished to play for when he finishes contract at the end of the season after not renewing & on top the new signing Club does not need to pay a transfer fee. Absolute bargain.

Spanish Football
Fernando Llorente

The Bilbao player is undergoing a personal "hell" being marginalized by his Coach, Club & insulted by fans. His choice of not renewing has been seen as "betrayal" & Llorente is feeling this mindless outrage on regular basis. Under this condition anyone would wish to leave & he has many interested European & Spanish Clubs knocking at his door.

FC Barcelona & Real Madrid have sounded heavily, as has Italian Club Juventus, but the Club that is sounding now strongly is
ARSENAL FC. The hitch is that if solicited in the upcoming "Winter Market" the English Club would have to pay at least his contract release clause which is 36M€, as saids above, he finishes his current contract the 30th of June.

This does not mean that Arsenal will wait & may perfectly take up the option of paying & getting the forward for the rest of the remaining "half" season. Either way there will be a "tussle" to entice the man with local giants Barça & Madrid possibly asking the player to withstand his local "nightmare" until the end of the season & then comfortably choose with an attractive salary package.

Stay tuned!

BAYERN MUNICH SECURES JAVI MARTINEZ PAYING 40M€ CONTRACT RELEASE

BAYERN MUNICH paid the 40M€ contract release clause of ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO & Spanish International player JAVI MARTINEZ to secure his services for the next 5 years. Spanish Football loses a great young player with enormous projection & future which is a Bayern gain.

BAYERN MUNICH TO PAY 40M€ RELEASE CLAUSE FOR JAVI MARTINEZ

Bombshell out of Germany this afternoon when German media "Bild" announced that BAYERN MUNICH would pay the 40M€ contract release clause of JAVI MARTINEZ midfielder for ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO & Spanish International.

Javi Martinez Bayern Munich 2012
Javi Martinez

The Spanish Football Club is silent & the German Club Bayern Munich dismiss the news as being incorrect. But what has set the alarms off is that Javi Martinez this evening started in the Bilbao line-up in a Football match which he went off in the 25th min & off to his home. This is a clear sign that things are happening, that Bayern has ordered he avoid an injury risk & wait until the paperwork is done.

Bayern Munich has made Martinez its Nº 1 summer priority & has put its money where its "month is" making Javi Martinez in the highest transfer-signing in German history, overtaking Mario Gomez.  Bayern Coach Heynckes has held conversations with Martinez to let him know personally that he would be a key figure in his Bayern team & would be playing in the midfield with an attacking role.

Martinez was also a priority for FC Barcelona but the 40M€ contract clause was too steep for their budget.

Stay tuned for developments as things need to be confirmed & need to be made official before we can categorically say the Bayern Munich has signed the Spanish midfield Football promise.

FERNANDO LLORENTE - ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO | LOVE, TREASON, EMOTIONS - REAL MADRID?

There is a soap box drama happening at ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO which is worth a post for all the Spanish Football Sports readers. After attempting to renew the contract of 27 year old forward FERNANDO LLORENTE, the player has announced to his Club President that he does not wish to continue another season. The situation gets spicy because the Spanish International becomes a “free-agent”  as of the 1 st of January of 2013 & can go to any Club he desires FREE of transfer, that is, Bilbao doesn't see an Euro. Therefore, the Club is in a dilemma (a) sell now to grab the cash or (b) stick to its peculiar philosophy (more later) of not selling & lose the money. But there is more behind this simple view...

This particular transfer tussle is colourful because of the unique characteristics of the Bilbao Club. The Club is the Sporting cornerstone of the “Basque region & culture”, as FC Barcelona, Athletic has won overtime the hub of the “spirit” of the region, unusual if you consider that the Club originally was founded by Englishmen. With this almighty responsibility, Athletic Club Bilbao has a policy of only having “Basque born or Basque family descended” players. This makes their players a very scare resource & very much prized at the Club which explains how hard it is to leave or be allowed to depart.

Fernando Llorente was born in "Navarra Region" ( adjacent non-Basque region, although claimed by Basque nationalists ) & was adopted in a Football sense by Bilbao Club 17 years ago, that is, the player has been with Athletic 17 years! Since then Llorente has become the flag & insignia of the “new Bilbao”, a goal-scoring machine & part responsible for getting Bilbao into a Europa League & Spanish Cup final. The man is simply a local hero-god, a symbol of the Club & indirectly (unfortunate perhaps) of Basque culture

To keep the player so as to renew his contract with Bilbao, the Club made a historical offer: 4.5M€ per year contract. Never has the Club made such an economic effort to keep its Football “masthead”. Fernando Llorente has been quiet, non-committed & has finally announced that he declines the Clubs offer & wishes to leave. The motive according to the player is “Sporting”, he wishes to play in a Club that participates in Champions League & can offer titles. This is an argument hard to knock back, as Fernando Llorente is a World Class forward that can easily play in any of the big European Clubs, while Athletic cannot give the player the titles or the World stage that is equal to his Football talents.

Fernando Llorente transfer 2012
Fernando Llorente

The NO from Llorente has hurt the spirit of the Club & offended the very fibre of the members & the masses with many seeing the Llorente decision as “high treason”, so much so that the “national hero” is now booed & whistle in his very own home ground "San Mames".

What is the Clubs official posture to all this? President Urrutia has sentenced a couple of days back:
(1) Athletic does not sell & will not negotiate.
(2) If a Club wishes Llorente they will have to pay the 36M€ (plus taxes) contract release clause.

This last point eliminates 98% of the current European Clubs. The much talked about & written offensive by Italian Club JUVENTUS says that they will not pass 20M€. If this is true then they too are eliminated. Plus if Bilbao offered 4.5M€ /season & Llorente refused this, then there must be a higher salary offer right?

There are only two Clubs in the World that can:
(1) pay a contract release clause of this amount (barring Man City & PSG)
(2) offer a player 5M€ or more per season as salary

… they are REAL MADRID CF or FC BARCELONA. As Sherlock Holmes said "elementary my dear Watson"

This has shed new light on everything. The hypothesis now circulating is that Fernando Llorente has already come to an agreement with one of these Clubs (Real Madrid sounds the loudest) & to not renew his contract, stick out this year at Bilbao & come free to the “new Club”. If this is indeed true the “cultural rivalry” between Bilbao & Madrid explains even more the Bilbao Club current stance, hostility & non-cooperation.

What will Llorente do now? What will Athletic Club do now? Will the first survive one more season at Bilbao which could turn into a personal hell? Will he accept a lesser offer from Juventus because Bilbao refuses to sell to Madrid (if the latter is true)?
Will Bilbao Club not sell & miss out on 20-25M€?

There are still 16 days left in the transfer market window. When the highly charged emotions unfortunately mixed with issues other than Football calm down, both parties will regain their logic. The Club will look for its money & the player will get his new opportunity. This is the logical thing. But Football , & emotionally charged Football, is not logical. It may occur that the player will stick out the season to go free elsewhere, or Juventus will pay more & sign the player, or Real Madrid / FC Barcelona will pay the contract clause, or not …whatever. What is clear & certain that Athletic Club Bilbao & Fernando Llorente have put an end to their long relationship? How will it end?

Stay tuned, anything may happen & believe me,  anything is anything. Or nothing :O)

ARSENAL THINKS IN FERNANDO LLORENTE

This piece of news out of Great Britain & ARSENAL FC is not new & again hits the local Spanish Football papers & media.

Spanish Football Transfer rumours
Fernando Llorente

The "Gunners" seek to have an alternative if Van Persie finally leaves the Club this summer. A name sounding loud to replace the Dutch striker is Spanish International & ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO forward FERNANDO LLORENTE.

According to the the English paper, "DailyMail", Arsenal Coach Wenger wants to finalize with the Clubs transfer dramas & prepare quietly for next season. The 27 year old Athletic Bilbao strike has a contract release clause of 35 million € which Arsenal could pay with the departure & the cash received from Dutchman Van Persie.

Stay tuned!

TRANSFER RUMOURS | FC BARCELONA IS NOT FORGETTING JAVI MARTINEZ

Been sounding for weeks now, FC BARCELONA has´nt given up on its idea of incorporating ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO & Spanish International JAVI MARTINEZ. The player is liked by new Barça Coach Tito Vilanova & sees the player as a great promise to fill the Central Defender - defending Midfielder positions. Matrtinez, apart from being still young, is very versatile & has an attacking Football spirit the fits the Barça philosophy.

Spanish Football
Javi Martinez

However there are some hurdles before FC Barcelona can really think about contracting Martinez:
  • Keita. The current Barcelona player would need to leave to make a position vacant & give Barça some money to finance a possible transfer operation
  • Bayern Munich & Real Madrid . The German Club have been very insistent & Real has been asking & seriously.
  • The 40M€ contract release clause from Bilbao
FC Barcelona have no intention of paying 40M€ but may put up 26M€ in an effort to get the Spanish International over. Meanwhile stay tuned, & watch Martinez play during the London Olympic Games representing the Spanish Olympic Football Team.

TRANSFER RUMOURS | JAVI MARTINEZ ON THE BAYERN MUNICH AGENDA?

Rumours are hot on the transfer front as expected at this height of the off-season & with the Euro competition in full flight. One here locally is the news out of Germany that BAYERN MUNICH has its eyes on ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO & Spanish International midfielder JAVI MARTINEZ.

The fact that a European giant has Javi Martinez in mind is not new nor is it surprising, so has Real Madrid & FC Barcelona.

Spanish Football transfers 2012
Javi Martinez

It is said that Bayern has an offer ready of 7M€/year as part of a 5-6 year contract. Big bucks indeed for the versatile midfielder who can slot into the middle of defence if needed. The youngster is recognized as one of the big promises of European Football.

The difficulty for Bayern is Atletic Club which considers Martinez a key element to their team & may react with a new & bigger contract offer. This & as said, the other two big Spanish Football Clubs also interested in the player.

Stay tuned!

ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO | BIELSA OK FOR ANOTHER YEAR

The wait is finally over. ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO & Coach MARCELO BIELSA have agreed to extend their contractual relationship until June 30th of 2013. The Argentine Coach was keeping in suspense these days all the members & fans of the Basque Club & has finally decided to continue for one more season at  "San Mamés".

Spanish Football
Marcelo Bielsa

In his first year, Marcelo Bielsa lead the team to the Final of the Europa League, which they lost to Atletico Madrid, & to the Final of the Spanish Cup ( Copa del Rey)  were they also lost against FC Barcelona.

The decision by Bielsa maintains on course the project began that includes many young Basque talents that will have learnt from the Final loses & under Bielsa are sure to mature to put in another great next season.

REAL MADRID EYES BILBAO JAVI MARTINEZ

ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO player JAVIER MARTINEZ has become the object of desire for REAL MADRID Coach Jose Mourinho. According to Spanish radio 'Onda Cero', Real Madrid has contacted with Athletic to negotiate the transfer of the player who has a buyout clause of 40M€. Real Madrid aims to reduce that amount & has offered 30M€, that's the limit set by José Mourinho for the signing of any player. However Madrid , it seems, has a competitor in Bayern Munich with their Football Director Christian Nerlinger seen a few days ago in the city Bilbao to apparently negotiate also with the Basque Club for Martinez.

Spanish Transfers 2012 rumours
Javi Martinez

This is not the first time that rumours arise about the interest of Real Madrid for Martinez. Seasons back it was said that President Florentino Perez asked about the possibility in a Directives lunch between Clubs. But the relations between both Clubs has undergone a "rough patch" since then especially after Real Madrid said no to the final of the Spanish Cup being played this year at the "Santiago Bernabeu" (home of Real Madrid). All this & the continued historical "political differences" makes things just that bit more complex in any negotiation process between Real Madrid & Atletic Club.

The adavantage that the Madrid Club has, said by media, is that Javi Martinez has given his OK to the move from Bilbao, & Real Madrid has asked the player to "force" things locally to smooth the path. Bilbao says that the release clause is 40€ plus taxes which is 55M€, a price that for the moment creates a significant wall.

Stay tuned in coming months.

SPANISH CUP FINAL RESULT | AT BILBAO 0 FC BARCELONA 3

FC BARCELONA has won this seasons SPANISH CUP FINAL ( Copa Del Rey ) with a 0 - 3 result over ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO. FC Barcelona Coach Josep Guardiola leaves the Club in the very best manner possible with another title under his belt & adding more to his legend status at the Club.

Excellent atmosphere tonight which bought the 2011-2012 Spanish Football season to an end.

Spanish Cup Final 2012
Pedro

FC Barcelona started in a "Blitzkrieg" fashion catching a nervous young Athletic on a wrong foot continuously. The pace & intensity put in by Barcelona was too much for the Bilbao defence as Messi, Pedro & company gave signs early with near misses that they meant business.

The business came in the 3rd min when PEDRO, who wished to send a message to Spanish International selector Del Bosque, opened the flood gates with his 3rd min opener. LIONEL MESSI then found the back of the net from a precision Iniesta pass in the 20th min & PEDRO put in a third ( his second ) in the 24th min that KOed Bilbao.

Spanish Cup Final 2012
Possible penalty

As with all finals there was a controversial moment when a Pique grab on Llorente in the penalty square was not called in the 26th min, an opportunity for Bilbao if called that we will never know if it would have changed anything at all.

Spanish Cup Final 2012
Lionel Messi

In the second half we saw Bilbao make some changes ( in I. Perez & A.Herrera ) in the midfield & they put a "marker" on the dangerous Messi whiched calmed Barça somewhat as Bilbao played more with pride than with head. Barcelona with a comfortable 3 goals played with calm & allowed Bilbao to play more the ball but without causing any real danger. The end result was that Barça cancelled out all the attacks & managed in the end to win the SPANISH CUP 2011-2012. Deservedly & overwhelmingly superior was Barcelona which now has 26 Spanish Cup titles & Guardiola leaves with his 14th overall title since at Barça as Coach.

Sad for Bilbao which losses its second final in a row this season but this will serve to give experience to their young team which I am sure will be back fighting for titles in coming seasons.

Congratulations to Barcelona!

Both teams have kept their cards close to their chest & are not giving hints as to what the line-ups will be.

ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO SPANISH CUP VIDEO

"All together. Go for the Cup". That is the name - "war cry" - of ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO in this video that the Club has just posted up on all the social media channels.

The motive is to warm-up the Bilbao followers & build up the atmosphere for this Fridays SPANISH CUP FINAL ( Copa del Rey Final ) against FC BARCELONA at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid.

Nice touch from the Club to subtitle the video in English for all the non-Spanish/Basque speaking fans. I am supporting Athletic this Friday , I think the team deserves a title for their wonderful season.

"GO FOR THE CUP"!!

TRANSFER RUMOURS | MANCHESTER CITY TALKS TO FERNANDO LLORENTE ?

MANCHESTER CITY representatives have been said to have met up with the brother of ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO & Spanish International forward FERNANDO LLORENTE , "Chus" who is also the players rep. The meeting was to express the clear interest of the English Premier League Champions to get the player over to England. That was back 27th of Abril & since then Real Madrid , FC Barcelona & others have sounded their sirens & music at Llorente.

Spanish Football Transfer Rumours
Fernando Llorente

The rumour puts the offer at around 36M€. But if the player puts in a grand Euro 2012 performance that figure - for any Club interested - may well lift & put some Clubs off-side.

Stay tuned!

ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO TEAM PHOTO 2012

Spanish Football Club ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO has captivated Spanish & European Football observers alike this season with their Football under the hands of Argentine Coach Bielsa. The Club has found a mix of experience & youth that now plays touch Football over the long kick up-front method.

The team lost the Europa League Final to Spanish Club Atletico de Madrid but has a chance to win a title in the Spanish Cup Final coming up against FC Barcelona.

EUROPA LEAGUE 2011-2012 | ATLETICO DE MADRID CHAMPIONS

The winner tonight was SPANISH FOOTBALL. The only sad event is that unfortunately there can only be one winner, in this case,  ATLETICO DE MADRID which proclaimed themselves EUROPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2011 - 2012 after defeating fellow Spanish Club ATHLETIC CLUB BILBAO 3 - 0. Atletico managed to win the Europa League Cup again with the last time being back in 2010.

AT MADRID EUROPA LEAGUE 2012
Falcao

Atletico de Madrid started strong & pressured up front while Bilbao was still calming down from the nerves of the Final. In one of those "nervous" moments FALCAO did a marvellous individual play piece when he "found-created" a shot that found the back of net in the 6th min. It was an extraordinary goal that shook Bilbao & sent a message of intentions.

AT MADRID EUROPA LEAGUE 2012
Miranda - Llorente

Bilbao reacted & bettered their play controlling more the ball & creating chances. But Atletico tonight was concentrated & was tactically almost perfect with maximum discipline in defence that cancelled out the majority of the Bilbao opportunities. In fact, Atletico had a clear plan, defensive discipline, pressure upfront & counter-attack Football. In one of those occasions FALCAO again did "his party trick" & individually created a magical goal in the 34th min that took Atletico half way home.

AT MADRID EUROPA LEAGUE 2012
Diego

The second half saw Bilbao make 3 changes & push the team forward to look for the goal that would help them attempt a comeback. But defenders Godin, Miranda, Juan Fran & Felipe Luis stopped all the Bilbao efforts & Atletico goalkeeper Courtois was secure & made a goal save that pushed Atletico closer to the title.

Then in the 85th min DIEGO sentenced with an individual play of stop-go-start Football & a crossed-shot to find the net for the 3rd goal. It was clear here that Atletico would be European Champions.

AT MADRID EUROPA LEAGUE 2012
Falcao

The man of the match was "Mr Europa League" , FALCAO with his 2 goals that confirmed him as the Europa League Top goalscorer - again. The Colombian simply put in a perfect night of World-class Football , as did his team.

From Spanish Football Sports, & me as an Atletico fan, congratulations to Atletico de Madrid,  & also to Athletic de Bilbao for being grand finalist & wishing them luck for the Spanish Cup Final coming up soon.
