REAL MADRID LOOK TO CRISTIANO RONALDO & STEVE GERRARD FOR THE 2008-09 EFFECT.

The signnings of BIG names serve Football Club Presidents to
deflect news, create "smoke screens" & keep their masses under
control. If Karl Marx said... " Religion is the opium of the masses",

SFS says..."Big name signnings is the opium of the fans".

According to "Sport" ( a Barcelona based paper), REAL MADRID is

already working to grab & sign the needed tranquilizer, in case Real
end up finally being overrun by Fc Barcelona & lose the League title.

There are two names ( apart from many others that circulate all
year): CRISTIANO RONALDO & STEVEN GERRARD.
Cristiano is an old & long desire of Real Madrid as we all know & it

will be extremely difficult for Manchester Utd to let him go yet.
Steven Gerrard is the more accessible, seeing that he has expressed his

desire to breathe "new air" publically & is frustrated with the lack of
titles at Liverpool.

However , these are speculations & part of the topsy-turvy world of
Footabll, pure rumours that you will need to stay tuned. SFS will be
as always!

SPANISH INDOOR SQUAD BEGINS ITS ROAD TO BRAZIL 2008

The current Indoor Football European Champions begin the
preliminary games for the World Cup in Brazil today aginst
Georgia in Caceres (Spain).

SFS would like to wish them luck & give them a mention, as the
Indoor side sometimes gets "eclipsed" by the outdoor catagory.

The Spanish Indoor team is considered the Best Team in the World,
as their various titles confirm, including European & World
Championship Cups.

SPANISH CUP SEMI FINAL 2008: GETAFE 3 - RACING 1

Around 4,000 Racing de Santander fans travelled to Madrid to
cheer on their team against Getafe in the 2º semi-final 1º leg
match played tonight with GETAFE defeating RACING 3-1 &

virtually securing a place in the final of the SPANISH CUP. If they
do, it will be the 2ºyear in a row & remarkable achievement for
such a modest side.

Getafe scored first in the 23rd min thanks to DE LA RED, as
seen above celebrating with his teammates.

Then 4 mins later Racing equalized thanks to SMOLAREK
(pictured), to put his team back with a chance.

Back the 2º half saw Getafe take control & they were rewarded in the
57th min with a goal by CASQUERO, that was followed by a 3ºrd in the

83rd min by MANU DEL MORAL.
Big advantage that should see Getafe go through to the final if nothing
"strange" happens in the 2º leg game.

on this extensive list.

SPANISH CUP 2008 SEMI FINAL - 1º LEG : FC BARCELONA 1 - VALENCIA CF 1

The 1º game of the Spanish Cup semi final has finished with
FC BARCELONA 1 - VALENCIA CF 1 . A draw that went right
down to the wire with Barça scoring in the very last moment &

it a controversial manner.

The game was a one way affair with Barça dominating & overrunning
the Valencia goal , the TV commentator said at one stage nearing the
end that Barcelona had shot 18 times to Valencia´s 1, but that one shot
was Valencia´s goal thanks to DAVID VILLA scoring from a Arizmendi
pass in the 69th min.

Then with one minute left a Barça last ditch attack saw an apparent handball
from Samuel Eto´o that went outside the box to have XAVI HERNANDEZ
( pictured below) drive the ball into the Valencia net & save Barcelona from
defeat. The Valencia players criticised the decision but it stood.

Real Spanish Cup stuff , a cliff hanger to the end. Now the decider will be the
2º leg at Valencia & it promises to be a real cracker of a match.

Tomorrow the 2º semi -final 1º leg game between Getafe & Racing
de Santander, surf into SFS for the result, scorers & images.

REAL MADRID FOLLOWING RUSSIAN PAVLYUCHENKO

According to news from Spanish daily "AS", REAL MADRID
is following closely Russian League two time leading goalscorer,
Russian International & Spartak Moscow forward
ROMAN
PAVLYUCHENKO
.

The 28 year old has had Real "spying" on him for the last two
years & the Real Madrid technical team see him as the ideal
person to complement "ageing" forwards Van Nistelrooy &
Raul for next season. Stay tuned!

SPANISH FOOTBALL MAPS

SFS friend & reader Bill makes sporting maps of many sports but
with a keen interest in Football. Here is a Spanish Football Map
that Bill has elaborated that SFS recommends you take a look at

Thanks Bill, great & interesting work!

REAL MADRID NEWS 2008.

Normally the news of players coming out of injury & at the sametime
ready to play this weekend is´nt something to publish about here at
SFS. But if it´s REAL MADRID & in a "slump" process, the return of
defender PEPE & forward ROBINHO take on other dimensions.

Coach Schuster wishes to have them back & playing this weekend
against Recreativo de Huelva. The Real Madrid coach is looking a wee
bit "nervious" & needs to find formulas to halt the bad results & FC
Barcelona who are closing the points gap on the table. Pepe & Robinho
are hoped that they will strenghten the defence & spark up the forward
line
respectively.

LUIS FABIANO CURRENT SPANISH LEAGUE TOP GOAL SCORER AFTER ROUND 25 / 2008

The International Brazilian & SEVILLA FC forward LUIS FABIANO
( pictured below) is doing what a forward gets paid to do, score goals.
But more than this is the speed & the effectiveness that Fabiano has
demostrated, that currently keeps him as the leading Spanish 1º
Division Top Goalscorer with Round 25 already played.

The figures are impressive 28 goals so far this season: 19 in La Liga;
7 in Champions Leagues; 1 in the Spanish Cup & 1 Super Cup.
Great numbers that put him on course not only towards the
"Pichichi" ( Sp.League Top scorer) Title but also towards the
European Golden Boot Award. The only player ahead of Fabiano
in European is Manchester Utd star Cristiano Ronaldo with 30
goals. While in Spain the 2º placed goal scorer so far is Zaragoza
forward Diego Milito with 5 goals less at 14.
Luis Fabiano is on fire, & his team is smiling along with the Brazilian

from ear to ear.

SAMUEL ETO´O GOALSCORER WITH HAT-TRICK & PHOTOGRAPHER

Overwhelming request to see the photo that SAMUEL ETO´O took
after gaining a HAT TRICK & scoring FC BARCELONA´s last of
5 goals over Levante yesterday.

Here it is , thanks to "Mundo Deportivo". A bit out of focus, but
OK. If Eto´o leaves Football...

REAL MADRID - FC BARCELONA: TWO SIDES OF THE COIN

Like always there are two sides to the same coin, Madrid papers
- As & Marca - use the same word - "STOOGES". Why? Check the
Getafe goal that comes after Robben thought he scored & his
teammates went overr to celebrate. Problem was it was disallowed
& Getafe took the free kick quickly racing up field to score, while most
of Real was still frozen looking on in dismay. See Video below:

"There is Liga, thanks to the "Stooges" (Headline)

"Stooges" ( Headline)

Barcelona daily´s - Mundo Deportivo & Sport - concentrate that
their is only 2 points difference & they are going for it ( the title)
after yesterdays 5 - 1 victory over
Levante & Real Madrid´s "stupid"
loss.

"Only 2 points" ( Headline)

"We are going to win this League" ( Headline)

As you can see, one city - Madrid - is entering a "pessimistic" period,
the other - Barcelona - an "optimistic" phase. We have LIGA folks!

SPANISH FOOTBALL - LA LIGA - ROUND 25/ 2008 SUNDAY GAMES RESULT

Big day in Round 25 Sunday games with plenty of goals continuing
from yesterday, & Fc Barcelona putting pressure on League leaders
Real Madrid with a bulldozing win & cutting the lead to 2ºpoints after

the latter lost! Here are the results , scorers & images.

ATLETICO DE MADRID
is sinking, since their loss to Real Madrid few

weeks back they have not been able to lift themselves. Today away to
OSASUNA they lost 3-1 & their Euro aspirations for next season are in
danger. Once
again the defense proved to be the big problem along
with a less than creative midfield that made errors & had no answers.
Osasuna started strong & rocked Atletico with two quick goals in the 2nd
& 6th min by SOLA & VELA (pictured above). The only goal for Atletico

came from FORLAN ( below) with a 30 mt pile driver , but that effort
meant little after Osasuna scored the third goal via HECTOR FONT
in the 76th min.
Disaster for Atletico, a real dilema for them.

DEPORTIVO
grabbed some desperately needed points with its
2-0 victory over ESPANYOL. The Espanyol case is similiar to the
Atletico situation as they are a carbon copy of bad play & losses.
Deportivo defender COLOCCINI (below)got them ahead in the
17th min followed by another in the 24th by LAFITA. Those 2º
goals were
enought.

MURCIA lost by a solitary goal against VALLADOLID, due to the
40th min goal by Valladolid inform forward LLORENTE. Final
score 0-1.

MALLORCA
& REAL BETIS shared the points with a 1- 1
draw. Scorers were VARELA in the 56th min for Mallorca
& EDU ( below) in the 70th min. Just result.

VILLAREAL managed to consolidate its Euro position with a good
away 1-2 win against ATHLETIC DE BILBAO. Bilbao started
strongly with LLORENTE scoring in the 4th min, but then Villareal
gradually got back & finally got through with two goals from
GUILLE
FRANCO
in the 65th min & CAPDEVILA in the 83rd min.

Like last nights Sevilla - Zaragoza game, the FC BARCELONA
vs last placed LEVANTE was a one way street. Barça won
5-1 with its forward & midfield stars coming nicely into form &
put more
pressure on Real Madrid in their neck to neck race for
the top spot.

FC Barcelona started the steam roller going in the 14th min via
a XAVI goal, but Levante got a penalty in the 41st which they
converted thanks to RIGA. But it ended here, & the MESSI &
SAMUEL ETO´O show then got underway with Messi scoring in
the 44th min, then Eto´o ( thanks to outstanding Messi passes)
scored Barça next three goals in the 56th, 62th & 87th min giving
the forward a
HAT - TRICK.
Looks like Barça is getting its act together just in the right moment
& they are keeping alive hopes in the 3 competitions they are still
very active: Champions, Spanish Cup & now very much so "La
Liga".

RACING DE SATANDER got the 3ºpoints against ALMERIA
with the solitary goal from TCHITE in the 6th min. Almeria
attempted to get back & lost 2 men with Red Cards in their efforts,
but the 1-0 scoreline stood stil until the end.

The above image of UCHE scoring in the 65th min is the moment that sent
shivers down all Real Madrid fans. REAL MADRID lost 0-1 at home & is now
only 2º points ahead of this nearest rival Fc Barcelona. This opens up the
Championship & it promises to be a cliff hanger, the pressure is mounting &
Madrid is feeling it.
Real Madrid had chances but did not convert & the mistakes are payed dearly,
Robben , Raul , Guti, Van Nistelrooy & Baptista all had chances but were left
there, just chances.

Will Real Madrid choke like Barça did last year? Over confidence?

JUANDE RAMOS WINS HIS 1º ENGLISH TITLE WITH TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

TOTTENHAM HOTSPURS has proclaimed itself the "Carling Cup"
(League Cup) Champions for 2008 after defeating Chelsea Fc 2-1
in extra time. Its the 5th title in 16 months for Tottenham´s
Spanish coach JUANDE RAMOS ( below) & his first English title.

Tottenham payed a huge amount of money to lure Juande from
Sevilla FC after winning back to back Uefa Cups, Spanish Cups &
Euro SuperCups, & after 4 months its payed off. The Spaniard has
re-organized the team to make it competitive & return it to the
top level. Congratulations, representing Spanish Football well!

SFS is also glad to see Jonathan Woodgate (above) back as well
after scoring the teams winning goal . The ex-Real Madrid player
was a Juande Ramos bet & again that has paid off as well.

PAUL GASCOIGNE. THE FALL OF A FOOTBALL STAR

SFS gets out of its blogging area, Spanish Football & Spanish Sports,
after seeing this video of English Football player PAUL GASCOIGNE
on " Current TV"
http://current.com

I´m a bit sad to see the man in such a state, from a strictly Football point
of view Gascoigne was an extremely talented player & could have reached
the top, had it not been for his "unstable" life. I think SFS can say in the
name of all Football followers that we wish you a quick recovery &
some long term health.

ATLETICO DE MADRID LOOK FOR A GOALKEEPER

Let´s be honest, while ATLETICO DE MADRID main goalkeeper
Leo Franco has been injuried, his substitute Italian Abbiati has´nt
exactly spread confidence. Its obvious that Atletico need a secure
keeper & they are already looking for one.
The speculation & rumour is that the desired person is PEPE REINA

of LIVERPOOL FC, but the man has a contract until 2012 & he
wishes to stay a few years more in English Football.

But there´s an alternative, & a good one at that, according to Spanish
daily "Marca",
MIGUEL ANGEL MOYA ( pictured above) from
MALLORCA. The technical team believe he could be the man for the
job & the club could begin negotiations soon to tie him up for next
season. Stay tuned!

SPANISH FOOTBALL - LA LIGA - ROUND 25 /2008 SATURDAY MATCH RESULTS

Two matches played tonight, Round 25 of "La Liga" with the rest
scheduled tomorrow, here are the results, scorers & images.

VALENCIA CF were looking for a victory to calm their particular
rough waters, but only managed to find a drawn port with a 1-1
result against RECREATIVO. Valencia basically lacked the finishing
touch in front of goal, & was unlucky with some tight referee decisions.

However, they started well scoring first via MATA ( above) in the 38th

min, but Recreativo managed to equalize thanks to MARTINS in the
52th min. From then on, Valencia tried , with a disallowed goal to Zigic,
but it just was´nt enough.

The other game was totally a different picture, it was a whitewash as
SEVILLA FC steam rolled REAL ZARAGOZA 5-0 with some brilliant
football, specially in the 1ºst half. Sevilla are coming back in form
& are heading straight for the Euro positions of the table, look out
Espanyol & Atletico as they are on fire.
LUIS FABIANO was the star along with his team, as he put in two

goals & forced the own goal from Diogo of Zaragoza who was later sent
off in the 2º half with a stupid tackle. The other goals come from another
own goal from Ayala, but this time force from Kanoute & the 5th by
KEITA ( below). It was an exhibition, Zaragoza had nothing to do tonight.

Check the VIDEO of this match - Sevilla Magic!

FERNANDO TORRES 3 - MIDDLESBROUGH 2

SFS normally concentrates on Spanish Football & lets the better bloggers
report on the Premier League, however the exception is
that the person
mentioned is Spanish, ex-Atletico de Madrid & is
doing very well at
LIVERPOOL. The number 9 , is FERNANDO TORRES & he has
scored a HAT-TRICK today against Middlesbrough to give his team
the 3-2 victory.

The young forward received a standing ovation from Andfield as
he was substituted with a minute left by his coach Spaniard
Rafael Benitez. Torres is having a great with 15 goals so far

for Liverpool & 21 goals overall for the season. Great news for
Fernando, excellent news for his team & fantasic for the Spanish
National squad.

IS THE RIQUELME "GHOST" HAUNTING ATLETICO DE MADRID

Could ATLETICO DE MADRID´s current problems been avoided
if they would have signned JUAN ROMAN RIQUELME from Villareal?
That´s the question that is being said by many fans & one that SFS
thinks is the main reason for the extraordinary slump in the teams
performance. Atletico is JUST hanging on to the Champions League
classification positions, & thanks to the loss & bad play from rivals
Villareal & Espanyol. They have been eliminated from the Spanish
Cup & yesterday from The Uefa Cup.

We wish to recall that Riquelme was 99.99% shut & about to put
his signature on the contract when at the last moment Football
Director Garcia Pitarch & Coach Aguirre ( below) halted the
operation. The reason, that according to their criteria Riquelme
would unsettle the balance of the team because he was a player that
the team needed to play for his style. Obviously its a tactical decision,
from men who are suppose to know about these things. The rest of the
people, including fans, media, experts & other club directives were left
baffled, they had to trust the decision of the experts. Result, Riquelme
signs for Boca Juniors.

Then once again, month later another midfielder MANICHE is
parted & told he will never play again by coach Aguirre. Ok the guy
was all trouble & enjoyed the "nightlife", but was it the correct
moment in the season to sell him to Inter Milan?

Lots of the problems at Atletico is the defence, we agree, but the
poor midfield not only leaves gapping holes that the defenders
struggle to cover, there is also no creativity, no imagination & match
deciders. Atletico has an awesome forward line with Simao, Forlan
& Aguero, but no one to feed them. How Riquelme is now dearly
missed.

Coach Aguirre is now under fire, & rightly so, as he has made some
crucial decisions that has harmed the team & the club. Along with
him, blame must go towards Football Director Pitarch for allowing
it to happen & sharing the tactical philosophy.

The wise thing is to "not rock the boat" now during this delicate
period & ensure Atletico qualify for Champions, or at least Uefa for
next season. After this, both mentioned names should be asked to
leave &
accept the responsability for awakening the ghost of Riquelme
that float across the club every weekend on the field & at the club.

What´s your view? Would Riquelme be now welcomed?

FC BARCELONA: MARC MUNIESA ANOTHER YOUNG FOOTBALL PEARL

FC BARCELONA is a fertile ground for young Football talent,
widely considered Worldwide as one of the best clubs to nurture
promising players, half the World club scouts "hang out" in Spain
to watch the "Barça kids" in action. Here are just a few names that
have come out of the "Barça Football School" : Messi, Cesc, Giovani,
Bojan...

The lastest pearl is MARC MANIESA ( above) a 15 year old
central defender who Captains the U/16 Spanish International
side. English club CHELSEA FC is following very closely the
youngster at this moment. However, its going to be difficult to lure
Marc over to England as the player is strongly associated with
Barça where he has been "born" as a football player, plus Barça will
do their best to keep the kid happy.

REAL MADRID 2008: CANNAVARO CONFIDENT OF THE DEFENCE

REAL MADRID Italian defender FABIO CANNAVARO has
expressed his solid confidence with his teams defence, on Spanish
radio "Onda Cero", & has been picked up by most Spanish papers
today.

"In my opinion, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Heinze & myself are the
best defence in Europe" ( Cannavaro)

What your opinion? SFS believes the 4 have played together very
little this season.

UEFA CUP RETURN GAMES 2008: 1 OUT OF 3 FOR SPANISH TEAMS

Only one Spanish team managed to go onto the next round of the UEFA
CUP tonight, after the two supposingly big names said goodbye.

Above is the away goal by PROGREBNYAK that gave ZENIT
ST.PETERSBURG
the victory over VILLAREAL, although
they lost the match. They came with a goal advantage & in case
of a draw an away goal is worth double.
Villareal almost made the comeback with goals from G.FRANCO
in the 74th min & TOMASSEN in the 89th min.
However, the effort was not enough, out & goodbye Villareal!

GETAFE played a wonderfull match & defeated AEK ATHENS
3-0 , taking the overall score to 4-1. The less powerfull Spainish
side of the three on show tonight was the flag carrier with goals
& great play.

Getafe player GRANERO ( above) scored first in the 45th min,
followed later by CONTRA ( below) & finally BRAULIO a minute
later. Michael Laudrups team are playing better in Uefa than in the
domestic league.

Below is the picture , as words are not enough. SFS will try however,
disappointment & absolute embarresment. ATLETICO DE MADRID
have been eliminated by English team BOLTON WANDERERS after
drawing 0-0, the goal at home to Bolton was enough.

The English team decided to defend their one goal advantage & placed
a wall infront of Atletico. If that was hard, they had lots of
chances that were not taken: a Forlan header, Luis Garcia shot & an
apparent penalty to Atletico not called. But apart from this Atletico
were slow & non effective, quite frankly they did not deserve to win.

A disaster that may have finally sentenced the future of Mexican coach
Javier Aguirre. Now the only objective left is to consolate & keep their
Champions League position on the Spanish League table, & even that
looks difficult.

FC BARCELONA IS THE WORLD´s TOP NEWS GENERATOR

According to the University of Navarra (Spain) via its ESIrg
Business School study, that was presented yesterday at the
"Business Centre of Birbeck ( university of London), Spanish
club FC BARCELONA is the club that most generates news in
the World. The Nº1 spot is directly related to the fact that the club

has in its squad Lionel Messi, Thierry Henry & Bojan ( pictured
below) that grab most of the World´s media attention.

The other clubs in the top 5 are
2. Manchester United
3. AC Milan

4. Chelsea Fc
5. Real Madrid.

Real Madrid drops with the departure of Zidane, Beckham, Roberto
Carlos...etc.

In the individual player spots , the Nº1 & champ is Manchester United
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, following him are Barça stars
Ronaldinho & Lionel Messi.

This study is important because it serves as a guide to sponsors &

clubs of the value & the prices that are paid for TV rights, merchandising
& sponsorship
of clubs & players.

FC BARCELONA: LIONEL MESSI TRIMS THE CELTIC CLOVER

From the city of Barcelona , from its based daily sports paper "Mundo
Deportivo" & its cartoon section "KAP" comes this post - match
comment about the Celtic 2 - Fc Barcelona 3 result last night in
Champions.

The Barça Argentine forward MESSI was the star that gave his team the
victory with his two goals.

SPAIN - PORTUGAL JOINT CANDIDACY FOR THE 2018 WORLD CUP?

The next World Cup will be in South Africa 2010, the following will be
Brazil 2014, & 2018? The solicitations are open & a possible SPAIN
- PORTUGAL candidacy is on the table.

The idea is gaining widespread support from key decision makers at FIFA.
Not only does it give the proyect an IBERIAN PENINSULA flavour, but it
reduces enormously the costs associated with celebrating the Final. Portugal
already has great stadiums due to them hosting the 2004 Euro Cup , plus Spain
has excellent transport connections & hotel infrastructures.
If Spain & Portugal do decide to go 100% for the World Cup, its going to be
an offer difficult to refuse.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2008: VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS CELTIC - FC BARCELONA & FENERBAHCE - FC SEVILLA

Just in case you missed the games last night.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2008: SEVILLA FC LOSE & FC BARCELONA WIN

Two Spanish teams played tonight in Champions League with mixed
results, Sevilla lost but are still alive with the return game to be
played, & FC Barcelona won & managed to take a huge step towards
the Q/Finals.

The home side FENERBAHCE won 3-2 against SEVILLA FC in a
classical European clash of end to end stuff. The Turks started well
thanks to the header & goal from ex-Atletico de Madrid Serb forward
KEZMAN ( pictured above) who scored in the 16th min. Sevilla reacted
& with luck on their side benefited from an own goal from EDU that
allowed
them to equalize in the 22nd min

However, the match was a see-saw affair & Fenarbahce got back
ahead via a great goal from LUGANO ( below) in the 56th min, to
again see Sevilla comeback & equalize in the 65th min via
ESCUDE

Just when it seemed a draw would be the just result, SENTURK
scored for the Turks to give them the win in the 87th min. This make
the return game at Sevilla the all decider, as both sides are still in there
with respective advantages.

The "4 fantasticos" finally did not play as Samuel Eto´o stayed on the
bench still nursing his injury. However 2 of the 4, MESSI & HENRY
did enough to give FC BARCELONA the win 2-3 over GLASGOW
CELTIC.
Celtic Glasgow started well scoring first in the 15th min via
HESSENLINK,
but was cancelled rapidly by MESSI 3ºmin later with
his goal.

Then Celtic got ahead again in the 36th min via ROBSEN (above),
but that was it, Barça shifted up a gear & equalized in the 50th min
thanks to HENRY & then got ahead - with some luck from a defensive
mistake - with MESSI´s 2º goal in the 78th min.

The win & the away goals sets up Barça for the return game at home.
They are in the box seat to go into the Q/Fianls, however they must
not sin of over-confidence as the Scots will not doubt be going all out.
