SPANISH SOCCER LIGA 2014

Super important win for Elche 1 - 0 over Almeria to keep their hopes alive of avoiding relegation troubles. Almeria were too defensive minded & perhaps paid for being over conservative because Elche won against the grain of play. The winner came in the 57th min thanks to a Herrera goal that tasted sweet for Elche, while Almeria perhaps deserved more. In the end the three points to Elche.

SPANISH LIGA 2014

If there is a Club that needs points & victories that is last placed Real Betis which keeps their dreams alive of staying in Liga after winning 2 - 0 RCD Espanyol. The man of the match was Betis Ruben Castro who scored both goals - 71st min & 88th min - to give his team three vital points.

SPANISH FOOTBALL 2014

It was an emotional afternoon at the "Vicente Calderon Stadium" for the Atletico de Madrid vs Real Sociedad match. The home crowd & supporters remembered the recently deceased Spanish National Team Coach & Atletico de Madrid legend Luis Aragones with chants, billboards & a minute silence, knowing beforehand that a victory for Atletico de Madrid would put them in Top spot of the Spanish Liga classification table.

The final result was a 4 - 0 win to Atletico de Madrid over Real Sociedad that included the return of Brazilian midfielder Diego Ribas who came on in the second half to steady Atletico & steer them onto the an important victory.

The first half was intense & very even with both teams applying pressure in all the zones. But in the 37th min David Villa managed to drive home a Diego Costa pass to put Atletico ahead. But happiness turned sour for Villa three minutes later when he injured himself to be substituted for Raul Garcia.

From this moment onward & up to the 71st min Real Sociedad rose above the occasion & put Atletico on the back foot to create numerous goal opportunities that Atletico goalie Courtois along with his defence had to answer & resolve.

The turning point was a deadly counter-attack in the 71st min that Diego Costa calmly converted to stabilize his team. Newly incorporated Diego Ribas made the team flow & play better with a third goal coming in the 74th from a Koke corner that Miranda headed for goal. The last goal came when Diego Ribas in the 87th min scored after a control in the square & he put the ball into the net. It was a fabulous way to comeback to Atletico for the Brazilian.

Atletico now takes the Top spot of the Spanish Liga classification table & will need to be 110% to stay there.

Spanish Soccer Liga 2014

Real Madrid had a golden chance to open up a two point gap over arch rivals FC Barcelona & grab the second position on the Liga table, but in front of them they had the difficult Athletic Club Bilbao in their stronghold "San Mames".

Tense, physical, intense & heated match that made Real Madrid suffer for a 1 - 1 draw & with 10 men as Cristiano Ronaldo received a red card in the 75th min. From here onwards Real Madrid had no other option than to hold on to the draw & fend off the continuing Bilbao attacks.

Bilbao could have won the match had they been more accurate & effective upfront. Aduriz & Muniain had two chances that still one does not know how they missed them. Real Madrid under a very hostile atmosphere held on with an excellent Ramos, Xabi & Modric to hold the fort.

Real Madrid went ahead in the 65th min when Benzema passed to CR7 who found Jese who knocked it in. It looked like Real Madrid had fended off the worst part but Ibai came on & in his second action scored a long range "screamer" in the 73rd min that brought the equalizer & blew the roof off the stadium. Things heated up & things again got tense & we saw a fracas in the Bilbao goal square that saw Ronaldo involved & sent off.

Real Madrid with 10 men then suffered & needed a Diego Lopez save to salvage the night. Athletic will be satisfied that they halted & took the wind out of the Madrid sails.
