Spanish Football action with Round 22 of Liga clouded with this mornings death of ex Spanish National Football Team & Atletico de Madrid legend Luis Aragones. Sorrow & respect in the atmosphere with a minute silence which was the norm for all grounds, including tomorrows remaining Liga matches. Here are all the final results - scores along with the goalscorers.
Granada & Celta de Vigo played their match on Friday night with the clash going to Celta 2 - 3. Celta get a string of victories consolidating themselves mid-way on the classification table, while Granada was disappointed with the result which included some defensive mistakes that could have been avoided.
Celta got ahead after a great play on the wing & pass from Rafinha that found the head of Cabral in the 28th min. Granada equalized in the 41st min with a nice El Arabi header that kept the scoreline equal until the 88th min when goalie mistake allowed Augusto Fernandez score the winner for Celta de Vigo.
The surprise result of Round 22 to date with FC Barcelona losing 2 - 3 to a determined & sticky Valencia CF. This puts the Liga title race on fire because if either Atletico de Madrid or Real Madrid win their respective matches tomorrow they will overtake Barça on the classification table. A bad game from FC Barcelona tonight with lots of defensive mistakes which made it contagious to the rest of the team as nerves & frustration took over. Even the usually flawless Barça keeper Victor Valdes had a bad day with the 2ºnd Valencia goal coming partly to his mistake.
Barça started well with a 7th min Alexis Sanchez goal but it looked more as if Valencia was more determined & were rewarded with the 44th min Parejo goal. Valencia surprised Barça shortly after the start of the second half when Piatti scored in the 48th min to put Valencia ahead. FC Barcelona reacted & was given a penalty for hand-ball that was not in the 54th min that Messi converted. But the Barça errors & defensive doubts continued & Paco Alcacer scored the third for Valencia in the 58th min. Barça then lost Jordi Alba to a red card & Valencia worked to hold the scoreline assuring their advantage to take the three points & put some "life" back into the Liga title.
Levante & Madrid Club Rayo Vallecano played out a 0 - 0 draw. Both teams worked hard most of the game but were ineffective with their limited created goal opportunities. Rayo Vallecano came close hitting the post from Baena. Also both goalkeepers had their say as well with the final result which finished in a deserved sharing of points.
Similar state of affairs with Madrid Club Getafe & their game against Real Valladolid. The final result a 0 - 0 draw that could have been more favourable to the visitors which deserved to be rewarded for their extra efforts. Getafe did hit the post at the end of the match & maybe be somewhat happy that they managed at least a point. The losers were the crowd who paid & felt the cold of a Madrid Winter night.
High tension Andalusia regional derby between Malaga FC & Sevilla FC. Malaga needs the points desperately to stay away from the dangerous relegation zone. They played the first half with this in mind & had Sevilla on the back-foot being rewarded with a penalty that Duda converted in the 31st min. But Sevilla managed to turn things around in the second half with the "magical" Ratikic coming into play. The equalizer came in the 49th min from Bacca & the second from a Ratikic free kick that found perfectly Fazio in the 66th min who headed the goal. The two goals from the visitors shook awake Malaga & they focused on attempting to find the equalizer & salvage at least a point. Instead they conceived a fabulous comeback with an equalizing "screamer" from Samuel in the 77th min & a third & winner in the 83rd from Duda.
Amazing end to a hard fought out derby were the hunger for points from Malaga FC brought to life their "fighting spirit" to manage a win. Final result 3 - 2.
