EUROPA LEAGUE LAST 16 PHASE - 1º LEG: ATLETICO DE MADRID 0 - SPORTING PORTUGAL 0 / VALENCIA CF 1 - WERDER BREMEN 1

Two Spanish sides participated tonight in the last 16 team phase of the EUROPA LEAGUE with similiar results & unfortunate overall lack of goal definition.

ATLETICO DE MADRID complicated itself & the return leg game after allowing SPORTING DE PORTUGAL "off the hook" with a 0-0 draw. The Portuguese team started strong with Liedson hitting the bar in the 27th min, but in the 30th min Sporting defender Grimi received a 2º yellow card & was sent off. With Sporting down to 10 men Atletico took control & began firing at the Sporting goal in waves.

SERGIO AGUERO is pictured above because the Argentine had half a dozen clear chances which he failed to materialize in goal. Under the watch full eyes of ex-Atletico star Paolo Futre, alongside Figo & Diego Armando Maradona watching from the VIP area, Atletico could not manage to score. Then in the 89th min Sporting lost defender TONEL with a red card for aggression. Not even with 9 men were Atletico able to score & thus the match finished with a sour taste in the mouth of the home side.

VALENCIA CF finished their 1º leg match with the Germans WERDER BREMEN in a 1-1 draw. The German goal came from a non-existent penalty called by the auxiliary referee who interpreted the habitual corner pushing into a penalty in the 24 min which FRINGS converted. From here & until the end of the 1ºst half Valencia CF veteran goalkeeper Cesar was the heroe as he stopped everything & kept his team alive.

The 2ºhalf saw Valencia go down to 10 men when Benega was given a direct Red Card for a supposed aggression, however this was a turning point as Valencia CF took complete control to attack the German goal & equalized in the 57th min (just 2 mins later) via MATA. Here the saviour would become German goalkeeper Wiese who managed to keep out the numerous attacks & shots at goal from Valencia until the end.

Great come back from Valencia with 10 men with the bad news being the David Villa shoulder knock that looked bad. While the Germans will be happy to take back home a valuable away goal.
