Deportivo de Coruña hosted RCD Espanyol in a relatively boring match of Football that ended in a 0 - 0 draw. What is worth mentioning are the numerous goal chances missed by both sides.
Sevilla FC not only dominated & eliminated Villarreal from the Europa League, they again won 2 - 0 away Villarreal in todays Liga match. Villarreal paid dearly for their missed goal opportunities - hitting the post twice - while Sevilla made the most of their chances. The goals for Sevilla came in the 49th min through Coke & in the 65th min through new Spanish international Vitolo. Deserved 3 points for Sevilla which consolidated the 5th place on the table over Villarreal.
Real Sociedad hosted last placed Cordoba which is playing for their Liga life. The visitors could not have started worst with a red card given to defender Pantic leaving his team with 10 men early in the match. Cordoba had no choice but to pull from heroics & admirably scored first through Florin Andone in the 12th min. However, Real Sociedad took advantage of the spaces & managed to equalize in the 34th min through Agirretxe.
Cordoba held out as long as possible & the psychical effort was noted as Real Sociedad began taking control. The second for Real Sociedad arrived in the 75th min through Chori Castro with a fine executed goal & the third in the 91st min through Finnbogason. The frustration set in on Cordoba as they lost another two men to red cards - Iñigo Lopez in the 81st min & Pinillos in the 94th - making things even worst. Final result 3 - 1
FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 2 - 1 in an intense & entertaining game of Football at the highest level. The win by Barça gives them a 4 point gap over second placed Real Madrid & may well have put the Liga title for this season in the bag for Barça. Although there is still 10 rounds left Real Madrid does not depend on themselves & it is a handicap, it is not an impossible,
FC Barcelona started dominating but went losing progressively the midfield & losing important balls-passes, but against the grain of play & from a free-kick Barça defender Mathieu headed the first goal in the 14th min. Real Madrid reacted with a good Modric & dangerous Marcelo controlling the play making. The equalizer came in the 31st min when Benzema pulled off a magical back-heel that Cristiano Ronaldo found & scored. From this point Barça was on the back foot & Real Madrid paid dearly later for not taking their goal chances. Barça defender Pique had a big part as he was tremendous tonight along with goalie Claudio Bravo who made some important saves.
The second half started with Real Madrid dominating but - again - against the grain, a precise counter found Luis Suarez who majestically scored the second & the eventual winner in the 55th min. From here till the end of the match Real Madrid suffered, slowly falling apart losing the midfield, & could have received more goals from Barça had Neymar not failed - 3 clear chances - or Iker Casillas saved for Real Madrid.
Special mentions to Pique, Bravo & Suarez who were fantastic, & for Real Madrid which although lost tonight, recovered some of its lost Football & can only improve in coming weeks. Worrying performance from Gareth Bale who disappeared in the 2º half & was not up for the occasion.
Therefore, a deserved win for Barça, that gives them an important advantage in the race for the Liga title.
