The good news however is that the 2º leg return game will be the decider & the tie is still wide open. Atletico de Madrid lost tonight but managed to limit the damage, while Bayern Leverkusen will be disappointed not to have done more & secure further the result for the return match.
The Germans started strong & fizzed a bit as Atletico grew to find perhaps their best moments. Bayern goalie Leno made an incredible save stopping Tiago from scoring & Atletico getting ahead with an away goal at the end of the 1º st half.
The German recomposed & crowed the midfield to pressure & find the counter-attack. Their chance arrived in the 57th min when in a midfield break-away Haken Calhanoglu fired in the opener for Leverkusen.
Atletico created some opportunities, but the red card to Tiago changed plans & the objective then became to halt anymore German goals, accept the 1 - 0 loss tonight & "retreat" back for the return 2º leg to attempt to turn the tie around in Madrid.
Good match by Bayern Leverkusen, bad night for Atletico which survives to fight another night.
