First big Spanish Football title up for grabs that kicks off the new 2014-2015 season with the 1º leg Spanish Super Cup match that ended in a 1 - 1 draw between Real Madrid & Atletico de Madrid. The Spanish Super Cup title is definitely still wide open with both teams with options in next Friday 2º leg away match.
Very even match with Real Madrid with more initiative & a more attacking drive, while Atletico de Madrid was very solid in defence, extremely disciplined tactically in the midfield & waiting for opportunities to arise to counter-attack.
Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted in the second half with a left leg complaint that seems not too serious, substituted with James Rodriguez who later scored his first goal & his teams opener in the 81st min. Atletico de Madrid reacted, previously putting on Griezmann & Rual Jimenez to beef up the attack, & from a corner Raul Garcia equalized in the 88th min. There was a blatant hand-ball by Atletico defender Mario Suarez in the penalty area late in the match that was not seen by the ref or called, this could have changed the final result.
Highlights, apart from the evenness of the clash & cited controversy, was the Ramos - Mandzukic tussle, Cravajal extraordinary second half, the excellent performance from Toni Kroos, the great last 15 minutes from Di Maria who came on & a possible Iker Casillas "mistake" in the Atletico equalizer that may set on fire more debate. Although the supposed Iker Casillas "mistake" has more to do with bad defending from his team-mates than an actually error.
In conclusion, it´s still pre-season & players still need more matches, but both Clubs look good at this early stage & will be definitely competing for the Liga & the rest of season titles.
Spanish Super Cup decider next Friday!
