ATLETICO DE MADRID 2009: A WRONG CHOICE OF COACH

ATLETICO DE MADRID were knocked out yesterday from Champions
by a better team, the Portuguese side OPORTO, but it could have been
different, all that was needed was a goal, just one goal. Fair enough a clear
penalty to Simao wasn’t called & that could have made the difference, but
one cannot base all is planning & tactics on this solitary event occurring.

The great mystery was the decision of Atlético Coach Abel Resino to
leave on the bench Uruguayan forward Diego Forlan, a natural goal
scorer with pressure game experience & who is leading his teams tally
with 17 goals in the Spanish League.

One would suppose that yesterdays Champions League 2º leg game was
an authentic final with the only strategy or objective being a victory, that is,
look for the goal or go down dying. Instead Coach Abel put on the field a
conservative & defensive line-up that looked more like Atlético wished to
defend the 2-2 score line of the 1ºst leg, when that meant elimination due
to the away goal rule. The team at the kick off looked ultra defensive,
with Aguero being the only forward upfront with the hope that Oporto
would leave enough “holes” to counter-attack. In a nutshell, no one
understands how a supposedly professional Football Coach could choose
a tactical strategy that has baffled nearly everyone & most likely caused
the elimination of Atlético from Champions. It´s being called here "acojonado"

or translated, the Coach "choked"!

SFS is not the only critical voice here, Sergio Aguero commented in a very
“diplomatic” manner in his post match interview that … “being upfront
alone resulted impossible, we all knew beforehand that Oporto had a good
defence & to fight against three defenders was an impossible task”. But
there is another statement from Aguero … “ in my team I would always put
Forlan on the field”, & to add more wood to the fire today Sinama
commented … “I doubt the Coach reserved Forlan for this Sunday”.
What was Coach Abel Resino´s defence today, this statement will go down
as a classic… “It was a good day to reserve Forlan”. I rest my case.

It’s clear that Atletico has made mistakes, one is firing Aguirre half
way through the season, they should have waited for the end of the
season. Second, it’s obvious that Abel Resino hasn’t the level or the
experience to Coach Atlético de Madrid. Remember his past is with
the Levente & Castellon teams, both in 2º Division & yesterday was
his second Champions League encounter. Many suspect that Atletico
offered the job to Abel because no one else was available or wished to
take up such a complicated Club situation, which would therefore be
the other mistake.

Now there exists only one objective, to get Atletico into the Top 4 places
of the Spanish League table in order to secure their participation again
in Champions League next season. If not, the Club should find another
coach, so successful the Club should find another coach.

Do you have a differing opinion?

I totally agree with aguero. Why would Resino leave forlan out? The team shows effectiveness with Forlan and Aguero up front together
