SAMUEL ETO´O : SHOWS AGAIN HIS TRUE COLOURS - PART II

Back in August 22 2006, SFS wrote a post titled: " Samuel
Eto´o shows again his true colours". A post which criticised
his infant & unprofessional attitude with his decision to
leave his teammates at half time & go home after being
substituted in the final of the Spanish Cup. The player raced
away & did not even celebrate the teams win. But the crux
of the post also made mention of a "false marketing"
campaign the is ongoing to try to clean Eto´o poor image &
give us the false idea that this man is an example for all children
to follow, specially those
of Africa ( Check SFS Archives
August 2006)

Well, after nearly 6 months on the sidelines with a knee
injury & all sorts of public appearances showing us his
"humanitarian marketing" side, he shows his true colour
again last Sunday.

After warming up in the 2 half against Racing for 15 mts,
his coach calls him to get ready to jump onto the field for
the last 5mts of play (remember he is coming out of a serious
knee injury) - Eto´o decision NOT TO PLAY & SIT DOWN.
It was a coincidence that MESSI went on before him - also
coming out of injury - to a huge roar from the crowd. Eto´o´s
decision has baffled Sp. media, his club & football followers.

But it continues. Yesterday, Eto´o DID´NT GO TO TRAINNING

with his teammates! Avoided his coach & his club.

SFS wants to once again denounce that these incidents are not
isolated & have repeated themselves through the players carreer.
Against all the efforts to "clean" & make us believe that Eto´o is an
embassador for African (World) children illustrating himself as an
example, we see through the falseness & witness an egoistic, infantil
& bad professional that is unworthy for any child or player to follow.
Another case of "wasted talented" in the global sense, as there is more
to a player & a professional than just scoring goals.

Opinions SFS readers?

You opinion here is completely bias. Ambassadors or not, we are individuals. We do what we consider right or wrong. In the match against Osasuna, he was in the pitch for 5 minutes. He did not even get the chance to touch the ball. But that is not it. He wants to play and off course so would you, if you are a football player. The coach wanted to bring him in for 5 minutes, just because of the pressure he gets from the fans. It is clear; Rijkaard does not want to play Eto’o. He wants fans to stop saying Eto’o is the Barca saviour. Off course he is not a saviour. We all know that, but his presence gets things going. Rijkaard is a proud man and he cannot build his empire on one player. That is the message he is trying to bring forward. What worries me is, he will always give Ronaldinho a chance, even if his form is poor or good, but Eto’o does not get the chance.

Ronaldinho is worried, because he knows when Eto’o comes back, he Ronaldinho will not stand a chance of being the Pichichi. He is a two faced guy.

Eto’o behaviour was not the best, I agree, but you have to agree he had his reasons for that. Keep in mind; it was Laporta decision to bring Eto’o to Barca, not Rijkaard’s. If you ask me, I would say, Rijkaard has never liked Eto’o. he has always used him.

I like Rijkaard and I have always been an admirer of his, but one of his draw backs is the prejudices he holds against some players.

I agree with SFS- Eto'o's behavior was childish.

Eto'o is very childish. That is a fact and so are many footballers. In his defence, he has very good reasons for his action. If these reasons are good enough for the fans, I would say I am not sure. I persoanlly think his reasons what ever they are are not good enough for the fans. My point is, that does not make his Eto'o a bad man.

All valid comments & thanks to all for helping enrich this interesting debate.

SFS follows a pattern , a behaviour that has sadly marked Eto´o football carreer, which is full of numerous incidents in all the teams he has been at. All remarkably similiar in content.

We can always benchmark; Beckham for example, also had reason to act in a similiar way when Capello banned him. What did he do? Continue training hard, not say a word against his club or coach & set the example of a professional. On top of that he scores in his return match.

Realize they are different cases, but it highlights that Eto´o in comparison is selfish, an infant, a non -team player & unprofessional. Not stuff of Champions you must at least agree with, I feel.
We should see through the false marketing image & see the real man.
Cheers

I completely agree with u Striker!

The questions we should be asking here is;
1.) Is Eto'o a team player?
2.) Does Eto'o need to play?

Ans. 1.)Yes Eto'o is a team player. He gets selfish at times, but in general, he works far more for the team as compared to his selfishness. In the Champions League so far, though he has been out injured, you will see he still has 4 Assists (set-up to goal) and a goal. Forget the goal; you will still see that, no other Barca player has that much Assists (set-up to goal). Also in the league he has contributed too many goals. That my friends, is not someone who is selfish, but a real team player.

Ans. 2.) We all sat down and complained that Barca needed Eto'o, when their form was poor. We all missed him a lot; though we all know Eto'o alone cannot win all matches. The whole issue with that Racing match is; Eto'o was promised 30 minutes. He did not ask for that. He was promised by Rijkaard. Rijkaard did not keep his promise.

What I am trying to say is, Eto’o’s refusal to play was childish and selfish to a degree, but to say, those are his true colours is not correct. Striker has a very good point, but his judgment is does not describe the true Eto’o.

Striker,

I agree with you here. Eto'o consistently whines and needs to be coddled. This does not help the team. Is he a great player yes. But this jealousy and one upmanship has to go.

@Elisa.

Don't misunderstand demand for respect and recognition for jealousy. He wants respect, he wants recognition. He is outspoken, he is very sensitive. But I don’t see this having anything to do with jealousy.
