SPANISH FOOTBALL - LA LIGA 2008/2009 - ROUND 1 RESULTS

Spanish Football is BACK! Yesterday two matches were decided &
tonight the rest of the games have been played of Round 1º. Here is
SFS
weekly round up of results, scorers & images in a resumed format
for a birds eye view of happenings, with surprises included!

ESPANYOL started proceedings after defeating yesterday
VALLADOLID 1-0 after LUIS GARCIA scored a great goal
in the 48th min. Man to mention here was DE LA PEÑA who
was insrumental in Espanyol´s victory.

VALENCIA CF started well yesterday after defeating a poor
REAL MALLORCA 3- 0 who was without ideas in their play. The
Valencia machine was directed by SILVA who was brilliant &
the goals came from VILLA in the 33rd min, MATA in the 37th
min & VICENTE in the latter part of the game in the 82th min.
Good vibrations at Valencia who needed a good start to shut away
last years "bad Karma".

ATLETICO DE MADRID brought their home stadium down as
fans enjoyed the "ecstasy" of a great afternoon of Football & a
4-0 victory over MALAGA. Atletico take top position of the League
Ladder & should give them confidence for the start of this long
season.

New Dutch signning HEITINGA scored 1ºst in the 25th min, followed
by two goals by Uruguayian DIEGO FORLAN in the 37th min & the
42th min via a penalty. The last & 4ºth goal came in the 81st min by
PONGOLLE.

Special mention to Atletico midfielder MANICHE who turned on a
great game & steared his side onto the win.

ATHLETIC DE BILBAO were given a lesson at home by ALMERIA
who won 1-3 that angered Bilbao coach Caparros. Athletic was lost
during the whole game & Almeria broke through in the 8th min via
PELLERANO, then via NEGREDO in the 32th min & finally the 3ºrd
via ORTIZ in the 51st min. Athletic managed to get a consolation goal via
VELEZ in the 58th min but that did not help clear away a very bad night
for Bilbao

Big surprise this afternoon, NUMANCIA defeated FC BARCELONA
1-0 with a goal from MARIO in the 12th min. Barça was very unlucky
throughout the game, with Messi hitting the post at the end of the
match, but Barça was "saturated" upfront with their men out of
place or lost. New Coach Guardiola will have to examine this game
a fix the errors, & quickly!

OSASUNA drew 1-1 with VILLAREAL with goals from MARCOS
SENNA
from a superb free kick & latter from a penalty by
NEKOUNAM for Osasuna. Well fought game with a just result.

New 1ºDivision side REAL SPORTING DE GIJON experienced
the new "level" with a 1-2 defeat to GETAFE. The latter dominated
with Sporting fighting back to then see how the victory slipped out
of their hands at the end of the game. The goals came thanks to
ALBIN in the 14th min with Sporting drawing via CASTRO in the
35th min, but CASQUERO gave Getafe the victory in the 86th min.

SEVILLA were lucky to draw 1-1 with RACING after Garay for
Racing missed a penalty. LUIS FABIANO put Sevilla in front in the
71st min to see 5 mins later Racing draw via JUANJO. Tough game,
well fought by both teams with good Football overall.

The other BIG surprise was the defeat of last years Liga Champions
REAL MADRID away to DEPORTIVO by 2-1. The 17 year curse
continues as that is the number of years that Real last managed a victory
at the Deportivo ground.

The key to the game was that Deportivo took advantage of Real´s
weakness - set plays - with Deportivo´s two goals coming from headers
from MISTA in the 26th min & LOPO in the 57th min. The only goal
from Real Madrid come from Dutch forward VAN NISTELROOY in
the 47th min
that looked like Real would do better, but Deportivo held
out to maintain
the lead & consolidate the victory.

ROAD TO WORLD CUP 2010: CESC FABREGAS BACK IN SPANISH TEAM CALL UP

SPAIN begins its World Cup 2010 qualification Group games next
month with matches against BOSNIA ( 6th Sept at Murcia) &
ARMENIA ( 10th Sept at Albacete). With this in mind Spanish
National side Coach & Selector Vicente Del Bosque has handed in his

list of players to represent Spain.

The novelty is the recall of Arsenal midfielder CESC FABREGAS
after injury & the absence of young 18 year old FC Barcelona
forward BOJAN KRKIC. The latter maybe called up by SERBIA

who´s Coach Radomir Antic has shown interest to have the player
represent Serbia in International Football. However, it´s Bojan
who has the final choice for who he wishes to play his first full
International match & everything indicates he will
wait until given
his chance with the Spanish National Team.

Here is the full list of players:

Goalkeepers: Casillas & Reina
Defenders: Albiol, Capdevila, Juanito, Iraola, Navarro, Puyol & Sergio
Ramos.
Midfielders: XavI, Xabi Alonso, Diego Capel, Cazorla, Cesc Fábregas,
Silva & Iniesta
Forwards: Torres, Güiza & Villa.

ESPANYOL: ZABALETA & RIERA GO TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE

RCD ESPANYOL has seen how 2 key players pack their bags &
travel over to the English Premier League:
PABLO ZABALETA
& ALBERT RIERA .

PABLO ZABALETA (above) did not come to an agreement with
Espanyol over his contract & MANCHESTER CITY came in to pay
his contract release clause of 8M€. As simple as that!

ALBERT RIERA had been negotiating for sometime & now its
official that he will go to LIVERPOOL FC for a transfer fee of 10
M€ plus 2M€ in incentives clauses. Liverpool gave a "poor" image
in its Champions League qualification matches & felt that Riera
would fill the gaps shown in the team.

Both players will be missed at Espanyol, but as the saying go´s
someones loss is someone else´s gain. Good luck to them both!

REAL MADRID: THE ROBINHO CIRCUS CONTINUES - REAL NOW SAYS NO TO CHELSEA FC (FOR THE MOMENT)

A late night dinner Wednesday night between Robinho´s rep Wagner
Ribiero & Chelsea FC Top Directive Peter Kenyon heralded the done
deal: REAL MADRID Brazilian forward ROBINHO was headed to
London. So confident was Chelsea that their 35M€ offer was to be
accepted that they placed on their Web page yesterday the availability

of buying the new Robinho Chelsea shirt. But something has gone
wrong & against the script.

Chelsea withdraw the Web offer hours later when it seemed that Real
Madrid announced to the English Club that Robinho would stay &
would not be transferred.

Whats going on? There are numerous rumours flying about from
all sources that are confusing & contradictory, lets attempt to see the
big picture. There are dos groups - the Madrid based Sporting papers
(Marca/AS) & the other papers (Elmundo.es/Mundo Deportivo/Sport)
- that give different angles.

Madrid Based Papers:
(A) They have announced today that Real Madrid has
rejected Chelsea FC latest offer of 35M€ & that the player will stay.
They cite the fact that Coach Schuster has expressed his desire to have

Robinho in his team & not to sell.
(B) The same papers cite that Real Madrid is angry with Chelsea for
putting on its Web site the availabilty of Robinho´s shirt, as they see it

as a "dirty" tactic of pressuring the Club.
(C) The papers, put the blame on Robinho´s representative Wagner
Ribiero in masterminding everything in the shadows & giving Chelsea´s
Peter Kenyon false hopes.
(D) Real Madrid has always said that 40M€ is the amount to begin
talking & 35M€ is still to low.

The other Papers:
(A) Yes, the operation has been stopped.
(B) The reason, that Real Madrid has´nt any player to announce

as a new signning publically to replace Robinho. They need to do so to
reduce the backlash from its ground based supporters & members.
(C) Carzola (Villareal) & Villa (Valencia) said NO to Real, this has
put Real in a further bad position with its supporters & public image.

(D) Real Madrid asked Chelsea for DROGBA - it was rejected.
(E) To find a solution, Football Director Pedja Mijatovic attempted

desperately yesterday to re-open the Kaka & Cristiano Ronaldo
options at Monaco ( Uefa Champions draw) - not successful.

(F) Only other names at this moment - PSG forward Boli & Joaquin
(Valencia) - but these are surreal & not "class names".

According to Elmundo.es, this explains why Chelsea withdraw from
its Web Robinho´s shirt - to respect Real Madrid wish to announce

a substitute beforehand. The fact that Chelsea has sold Wright -
Phillips yesterday to Manchester City gives evidence of a deal between
Real Madrid - Chelsea. That Real Madrid maybe pressuring Chelsea

to let go Drogba & finally that Peter Kenyon is staying in Madrid for
the new events gives signal that it´s not all shut

So which news is right? Real Madrid announce that Robinho WILL
NOT be transferred & that it´s all an operation of Robinho´s
representative working in the shadows OR that Real Madrid is looking
desperately to find a replacement before letting go of its Brazilian
player?

SFS believes in the following - Yes, there was a deal. But the fact that
Cazorla & Villa said NO to Real Madrid torpedoed everything. Real
Madrid has´nt a "class name" to announce as a substitution & will not
transfer Robinho until it has one.

There is 3 days left, anything could happen...Drogba be offered for
example,
which may put back in course the opeartion, but until then,
Robinho - for the moment - will stay at Real Madrid. This is the
Football CIRCUS were
players are just meat to trade. Stay tuned, the
fat lady has´nt sang as yet.

DEPORTIVO WINS AT SPLIT & GOES INTO UEFA

Spanish Club DEPORTIVA A CORUÑA lost its 1º leg game 0-1
to Croatian side HAJDUK SPLIT & needed to win tonight to assure
a place in this seasons UEFA Cup. The Spaniards did not disappoint
with a 0-2 victory in the 2º leg that puts them back in Europe after 3
years of absence.

It was a tough match, as expected with 7 yellow cards & 2 Red
(Andric 66th & De Guzman 90th) that saw Deportivo go out

for the victory. The 1ºst goal came in the 43rd min thanks to
RIKI & the 2º in the 88th from a penalty by VERDU.

Great win, great night for Deportivo & Spanish Football.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2008/09 DRAW: REAL MADRID IN GROUP OF "DEATH"

Four Spanish teams qualify for this years Champions League:
Villareal , Real Madrid , FC Barcelona & Atletico de Madrid & they

all learnt this evening their Group & their opponents in the UEFA
draw held in Monaco.

The results were mixed for the Spanish Club with the most
notable result Group H were Real Madrid was matched with
some notable & stiff opponents. You can easily name this
the " Group of Death" with Juventus, Zenit of St Petersburg
& Bate Borisov joining the Spaniards.

The other highlight was in Group D were Atletico & Liverpool
will face each other & thus see the return to the Vicente
Calderon Stadium ( Atletico´s ground) of Fernando Torres of
Liverpool.

Here are the Groups with Spanish teams & their opponents, as
you can see Group H is the tough one.

WHY IS MARADONA AN ATLETICO DE MADRID FAN?

Why does Maradona witness Atletico de Madrid games, like
yesterdays important Champions League qualifying clash against
Schalke 04 ( as seen in the image below)?
Question that SFS has received from its readers via email.

Reason: Atletico de Madrid Argentine International SERGIO AGUERO
has a relationship with Maradona´s daughter Gianinna & both are
expecting their first child. Aguero is Maradona´s son -in - law & will
soon be grandfather.

Maradona is an Atletico de Madrid fan!

ANOTHER GOALKEEPER GOAL FROM BRAZIL

It´s not Spanish Football, but these types of goals are always exciting
& catch the attention. Surfing the web SFS ran into this clip: The Brazil
Serie B league - Avai goalkeeper Eduardo Martini
scores a goal from
his own area against Parani Club.

By the way Avai won 3-1.

EVER BANEGAS LOANED TO ATLETICO DE MADRID

According to "Marca" & "Mundo Deportivo", VALENCIA CF
Argentine International midfielder & recent Olympic Gold
Medal winner, EVER BANEGAS ( pictured below) flew

yesterday to Madrid for medical examinations. It´s a clear
sign that ATLETICO DE MADRID will shortly announce
that they have come to an agreement with Valencia for the loan
of the player for this season.

Atletico will pay his salary - 1,3M€ - with an option of buying if
desired at the end of the season. It is expected that the Argentine will
be presented tomorrow to the media.

With Champions League qualification assured, after qualifying

yesterday with its victory over German side Schalke 04, Atletico
may well make another effort of signning a star player before the
transfer deadline date of the end of this month. Stay tuned!

NEWS FLASH - Atletico presented today Banegas ahead of its
announced
tomorrow presentation

ATLETICO DE MADRID BACK IN CHAMPIONS AFTER 11 YEARS (SEE VIDEO)

It was a magical night at the Vicent Calderon stadium as ATLETICO
DE MADRID managed to turn a 1-0 disadvantage into a 4-0 victory
over German Club SCHALKE 04 to qualify for this years Champions
League. Atletico return to the maximium level in European Football
after an 11 year absence.

SERGIO AGUERO was vital & the man of the match as not only
did he score the 1ºst goal with a header in the 18th min, but

set up all the other 3ºgoals to help lead his side to victory.

Atletico was determined, concentrated & went for the victory

from the start, roared on by their crowd ( with Maradona cheering
along) in a packed ground that made the Madrid night vibrate with
goals & joy. DIEGO FORLAN scored Atletico´s 2º goal in the 51st
min, followed by the 3ºrd via LUIS GARCIA in the 81st & MAXI
RODRIGUEZ via a penalty in the 87th min.

The only bad note was the Red Card given to PANDER for Schelke

04 in the 86th min, however the final result was just as Atletico went
on to take its well earned glory. See the below VIDEO of all the goals
(as long as "You Tube" decides not to withdraw it!):

SFS BACK FROM INDIA & SEES PLENTY OF NEWS

Hi SFS readers, just got back from India after 10 crazy days of humidity,
hassling street sellers, rip-offs, elephant rides, ricksaws, sights , chaos
& sounds that
put the mind in another dimension. However, my return
back to Spain sees that SFS has missed out on action &
there´s been
plenty of news generated in its absence:
1. Real Madrid beat Valencia to comeback in the 2º leg & grab the Spanish
Super Cup.
2. FC Barcelona lost yesterday to Wisla by a goal but managed to

qualify for the Champions League.
&

3. The Spanish transfer market is Red hot with plenty of rumours.

VILLAREAL Spanish International SANTIAGO CARZOLA (above)
has rejected a REAL MADRID offer & renewed with his current club
for another 6 years. Big surprised as it was a done deal, but Villareal
counter-attacked in the last minute with a better offer.

Seems the "bad luck" continues with REAL MADRID as it has been
announced that VALENCIA CF has rejected a 40M€ offer for its
player DAVID VILLA & has bettered his contract until 2014 & a 3M€
/season wage. According to "Marca", Villa will announce in a press
conference this afternoon his intention to stay at Valencia. Can we
believe this? Apparently its true according to local media, however
SFS feels it´s an incorrect professional decision by Villa, but it´s his
deal & decision.

Staying at REAL MADRID, ROBINHO is still generating news it seems.
Real Coach Schuster wants the Brazilian to stay, but directives don´t
mind selling him if Chelsea lifts its offer to around the 48M€ mark. This
story will go right down to the deadline date of the 30th of August.

Good to see Atletico de Madrid Argentine International SERGIO
AGUERO get his dreamed GOLD MEDAL at the Beijing Olympics.
He comes back at the most crucial time to help ATLETICO DE
MADRID attempt to comeback from the 1-0 1º leg away defeat at
SCHALKE 04 for Champions League qualification.

Tonight Atletico plays its most important game of the year...& the

new season has not got underway. In front of their home crowd they
will attempt to win the 2ºleg with Aguero & Maniche , a surprise
inclusion, to get back into Champions after an 11 year absence. It will
be nail bitting stuff & we are all hoping they can pull this off as a loss
will be a "disaster" so early in the season. Surf into late tonight for
details.

So there you go, been away 10 days & I´ve missed so much stuff. SFS

is glad to be back & serve its readers.

SFS BACK THE 28TH OF AUGUST

SFS is off to INDIA for 10 days ...doing the Golden Triangle
route to finish in Benares & wash away its negative
Karma.
Obviously SFS will not have any access to Internet
& will be
totally focused in attempting to ride an Elephant at
Jaipur,
tackle travel on buses & on trains...plus avoid the "Delhi

Belly" - if that is possible at all.

There is plenty of reading on the below posts if desired &
you can still follow all the news in the SFS Link Section on
the right-hand side bar.

Cheers to all, & see you back with all the usual posts on
the 28th of August.

SPANISH SUPER CUP 2008 1º LEG: VALENCIA DEFEATS REAL MADRID

The Spanish Football season for 2008/2009 kicked off tonight with the
winner of the Spanish Cup - VALENCIA CF - taking on "La Liga"
Champion - REAL MADRID - in the 1ºst leg of the Spanish Super
Cup 2008
. This trophy traditionally heralds in the
new season & tonight
Valencia took the glory with a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid

Valencia looked good, real good tonight as they played sharp Football,
was mobile & looked confident in what they were doing. Real Madrid

was virtually overrun via the wings & lacked real control of the
midfield, in fact, they spent most of the night defending & Real
goalkeeper Casillas saving shots.

However, Real has VAN NISTELROOY who is a guarentee up front
& the two clear opportunities that he received - 13th min & 67th

min- he riffled them home.

Having said this, Valencia was in control & in the 2ºnd half got
the job finally done with goals from MATA ( 55th min), DAVID
VILLA (58th min) & VICENTE ( 80th min), independently if
Real Coach Schuster put on Ramos, Guti & Robben to fill the

gaps in the defence & midfield.

Good win to Valencia who deserved the victory, & now go to Madrid

for the 2ºleg - 24th of August - for the decider. I´m sure Real Madrid
will do better & strenghten its defence with its regular players &
improve, because tonight was a signal that they improve or they will
be
in trouble this season.

BEIJING 2008 - OLYMPIC TENNIS: RAFAEL NADAL WINS GOLD MEDAL IN MENS SINGLES (SEE VIDEO)

At the age of 22 Spaniard RAFAEL NADAL has already notched up
30 individual titles ( including 4 French Open & 1 Wimbeldon), a Davies
Cup title & now an Olympic Gold Medal after defeating Chilean
Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

To add to this years golden run, tomorrow Rafael Nadal will be officially

acclaimed as the World´s Nº1 ranked player in Tennis, taking the spot off
long time "owner" Roger Federer.

Amazing for such a youngman & for a Spaniard. Rafael Nadal is
the personafication & the epitomy of what this country aspires to
be in the modern World: a winner, humble yet proud, persistant,
International prestige, hard working, cosmopolitan, a tough &
calculating mentally & a great Champion. These qualities are not
common
to the mayority of Spaniards who are everything opposed,
but
things are changing & Rafael Nadal is leading the generational
change.

Along with him are others: the young Spanish Football Squads
( U-15, U-17,U-20 & the National side: Torres, Casillas, Cesc, Iniesta
...), Pau Gasol (Basketball), Fernando Alonso (Formula 1), Pedrosa,
Lorenzo,Bautista, Debón...(Moto GP), Sergio Garcia (Golf)...etc & etc.

The Spanish mentality is changing, its opening & its globalizing, all thanks

to Nadal & his barrier breaking mentality & humanity. Thank you Rafael,
thanks for making this country feel optimistic & proud, we hope not to

wave the flag & praise you when you only win, but also be there for you
when you
lose. As we all know its common for Spaniards to disappear
from the "spotlight" & scene when things go bad & the good times
disappear.

MOTO GP: GOOD DAY FOR SPANISH RIDERS AT THE CZECH REP.

Moto GP got back today after its break with Spanish riders doing
well in all 3 catagories. The Czech Republic circuit gave margin for
some great racing that brought along excitement & some surprises.

In the Moto GP catagory, Italian Valentino Rossi won after Australian

World Champion Casey Stoner surprising fall while leading the race
ahead of Rossi. Then battle for the 2º place gave the other surprise as
Spaniard
TONI ELIAS ( as seen below) finally got on the podium
after lots of bad luck & suffering in previous years ahead of 3rd
place Capirossi.

Valentino Rossi now opens a 50 point gap in the World Championship
table over Casey & looks set to regain the title if things don´t go wrong.

Provisional World Championship Table:
1. Rossi 237pts; 2. Stoner 187pts; 3. Pedrosa 172pts

In the 25o cc catagory, two Spanish riders got on the podium
after some spectacular racing. ALEX DEBÓN (see below) won
ahead of the other Spaniard ALVARO BAUTISTA with current
World Champ points leader Marco Simoncelli in third place.

Provisional World Championship table:
1.Simoncelli 180pts; 2. Kalio 164pts; 3. A.Debón 139pts

In the 125cc catagory Spaniard JOAN OLIVÉ finsihed 3rd behind
Mike di Meglio & the winner Stefan Bradl.

Provisional World Championship table:
1. Meglio 186pts; 2. Corsi 142pts; 3. Bradl 126pts

NEXT RACE - San Marino GP

SEVILLA FC WINS THE "CARRANZA" TROPHY

After their semi-final pitch battle in defeating Villareal, SEVILLA
FC
got back to Football & defeated CADIZ 0-3 in yesterdays
final to take the prestigious "Carranza" Trophy.

Two goals from Uruguayian CHEVANTON & one from ADRIANO
gave the victory & sent "good vibrations" throughout the Club &
fans before the start of the new season. Sevilla look good & will
continue to be a strong & one of the main contenders for the "Liga"
title this year.

JOAN GAMPER TROPHY 2008: FC BARCELONA DEFEATS BOCA JUNIORS "IN EXTREMIS"(SEE VIDEO)

The Joan Gamper Trophy ( named after the founder of FC
BARCELONA) is played traditionally every year with an invited
top class team to celebrate the new season in front of the Barça
members/fans. It´s a celebration were the Club presents the new
squad ( see foto below) before playing for the Trophy , with this
years guests
Argentine Club BOCA JUNIORS.

It was Boca Juniors 5th visit for this trophy in which it had never
won & they wanted to win tonight. FC Barcelona started the 1º half
with its star players (Eto´o, Xavi, Puyol, Iniesta...) on the bench.
The first 45 min was an equal affair with chances falling to both sides,
but nothing really to highlight.

The 2º half saw Barça bring on its above mentioned stars to
go for the game, but were seriously surprised in the 73rd min
when Boca player VIATRI scored after a horrible defensive
mistake from Barça. In fact, Barça has a lot of work to do in defence
as they concentrate so hard in attacking that they leave gaps in
the backend. Boca was exploiting this as much as possible & were
putting Barça in some dire straits all night.

Then in the 90th min when it looked like Boca would finally win the
Gamper Trophy, CARLES PUYOL headed in a brilliant equalizing
goal that secured that it would all go down to the penalty shoot-out
at least.

But there was more unbelievable play ahead, when Xavi crossed
to SAMUEL ETO´O in the last seconds & the Camaroon forward
headed in the second & winning goal to give Barça its 33rd
Gamper Trophy & bring the house down.

Close call for Barça, but its a win. Need some work in defence however
to stop the dangerous counter-attacks. Very unlucky Boca Juniors who
played an excellent game tonight in which they nearly won.

FINAL SCORE : FC Barcelona 2 - Boca Juniors 1. See the goals in
the following VIDEO:

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE KICKS OFF WITH GOAL FROM FERNANDO TORRES & MIKEL ARTETA

The English Premier League kicked off its 2008/09 season today
& we got beamed the SUNDERLAND vs LIVERPOOL FC match.
Liverpool always stimulates interest in Spain because of its Spanish
Manager & players.

In a nut shell, Liverpool played badly until Xavi Alonso came on for
the 2º half & got his team moving the ball around. Then in the 82th
min FERNANDO TORRES got the ball & "powered" a furious shot
from 20 -25mts to score a super goal that gave Liverpool the victory.

Great start for Torres who continues where he left off. This could be

another great season for the Spaniard, SFS wishes him all the best
as he is in Golden Ball contention!

Speaking of goals & Spaniards, MIKEL ARTETA for Everton
scored a fantastic goal that surprised everyone, including the
goalkeeper. However, his goal was´nt enough to give his team
the victory how lost 2-3 to Blackburn Rovers.

SEVILLA FC DEFEATS VILLAREAL IN A "FRIENDLY" - WITH 4 RED CARDS???

SEVILLA FC met VILLAREAL in the semifinal of the summer
Trophy - "CARRANZA of Cadiz" - & ended up as a mini - war

that continued later in the dressing rooms.

These summer tournaments are FRIENDLY games planned to
fine tune the teams before the real stuff happens in the Liga.
However, the motivation levels were beyond normal

& the 2º half saw the situation explode with strong & dangerous
tackles coming from everywhere & the occasional elbow thrown in

as well.

The end result was FOUR RED CARDS: Capel, Viera, Drago &
Eguren, & two serious injuries: Godi (Hospital-leg) & Adriano
(Shoulder)

By the way Sevilla won 2-0 ( 2 goals LUIS FABIANO) Villareal
& will play CADIZ in the final.

SPANISH FOOTBALL 2008: ATLETICO DE MADRID & FC BARCELONA STILL LOOKING FOR SIGNNINGS

The transfer period does not shut until the 31st of August & teams
are still busy moving about in the Football market as ATLETICO
DE MADRID
& FC BARCELONA ( along with Real Madrid) are

showing with their latest offers.

According to Spanish dailys "AS" & "Marca", Atletico de Madrid
has returned to the attack & has made an offer to German Club
WERDER BREMEN for its Brazilian midfielder DIEGO. The
Spanish Club needs a midfielder to control its game & has decided

to go all out for the Brazilian independently if it qualifies or not for
Champions League. The only obstacule is that Atletico offers 16M€
while Bremen wishes 25M€, thus indicating that a 20M€ offer from
Atletico may be enough to shut the deal.

From Beijing, were Diego is with his country participating in the
Olympics, the Brazilian looks favourably at the possiblity of playing

in Spain. Stay tuned!

FC BARCELONA still wishes another signning upfront to guarantee
the forward line for this season. With David Silva out of contention
after extending his contract with Valencia CF, Russian sensation
ARSHAVIN is back in the picture. The ZENIT player is "dying"
to come to Barcelona, but it´s all a question of money. FC Barcelona

offers 16M€ while Zenit wishes 25M€ at least before it begins talks.

If this option fails, Barça has a Plan B in the name of RODRIGO
PALACIOS
of BOCA JUNIORS, according to Barcelona based

dailys "Sport" & "Mundo Deportivo". Stay tuned.

UEFA CUP 2008: DEPORTIVO WILL HAVE TO SUFFER AT SPLIT

UEFA CUP Football kicked off yesterday with Spanish Club
DEPORTIVO A CORUÑA in action, but the result achieved was

not expected. They met Croatian side HAJDUK SPLIT in the
1º leg game & finished in a 0-0 draw, which will make the return
2º leg encounter at Split like landing in "hell".

The Croatians went into the match with the textbook theory of ...
"lets get out of here with a draw", & it worked brilliantly as they

placed a defensive wall that made Deportivo crash into it. Split
now go home with its advantage to attempt to win the decider.
Deportivo will have to suffer up till the end if they wish to continue

on the Uefa Cup road.

REAL MADRID TRANSFER NEWS 2008: BAPTISTA GOES TO AC ROMA

Local Sports daily "Marca" has published on its web that Italian Club
AC ROMA has finally signed REAL MADRID Brazilian International
midfielder
JULIO BAPTISTA

The transfer fee is 12M€ plus incentives & the player signs for Roma
for the next 4 years. The player is expected to fly off to Rome this
Sunday for all the formalities & latter be presented
to media & fans
by the Italian Club.
