REAL MADRID has eliminated PARIS ST GERMAIN after defeating the home team 1 - 2 tonight in the return 2º leg match & taking the overall aggregate to 5 - 2 in favour of the Spaniards. Real Madrid moves onto the Quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League while PSG will suffer harsh criticism with collateral damage coming to Coach Emery who will most likely be fired this season. The French team invested 418M€ to be high up with the Best of Europe & has been eliminated outside the Top 8. Said another way, a complete disaster that will need heads to roll.
Real Madrid went into this game without Modric, Kroos & Isco, giving the main stage to the youngsters like Lucas Vazquez, Asensio & Kovacic all putting in great performances. It seemed the PSG could turn things around witnessing their first 15 minutes, but Real Madrid grew in confidence, control & domination events to steer themselves towards the victory.
Paris St Germain had chances, one clear occasion by Mbappé, but failed to finish off, while Veratti over zealous behaviour earned him a yellow in the 1º half & another yellow for arguing in the 2º half which left his team with 10 men. Very undisciplined attitude given the circumstances of the night for the French.
The goals came in the 2º half when Cristiano Ronaldo connected a cross from Lucas Vazquez in the 51st min that earlier Asensio had stolen from Dani Alves. With things looked lost for PSG & with 10 men, the French reacted & managed to score their equalizer via a fumble the Cavani knocked in the net at the 71st min. However, Real Madrid with Kroos in for Kovacic retook the midfield & controlled the match. With the PSG players broken & tired the spaces appeared & Real Madrid got their 2º goal through Casemiro in the 80th min. End of story for Paris St. Germain.
Real Madrid deserved the victory as they attacked more, created more goal opportunities hitting the post 3 times & Benzema missed 2 sitters. About Benzema, his is the only bad news for Real Madrid, being terrible in front of goal & perhaps sealing his next future phase outside Real Madrid.
Man of the match was Casemiro who was a rock in defence, everywhere in the midfield & even scored the second goal. Ronaldo was a motivator, a driver & again vital for his team. Overall a solid performance from the Spanish which advances on while PSG enter a grim & uncertain couple of weeks. The Neymar case will grow as speculation will increase about a possible move to Real Madrid. Stay tuned.
