It went down to the wire, right into extra-time & into the dreaded penalty shoot-out. After more than 120 mins of intense Football, see-saw penalty misses, Spanish Altletico de Madrid turned around the tie & won the penalty knock-out to qualify over Bayern Leverkusen for the Quarter-Finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Atletico Madrid managed to score "the vital" goal to even the tie in the 26th min when a Mario Suarez shot deflected off a German defender. From here & until the end of official play, including extra-time, we witness an intense German team holding on with grit & heart. They were sticky, frustrating & awkward halting the game with numerous fouls & making things generally difficult for Atletico. Worthy competitor fighting to stay alive.
The home team suffered injuries early, goalie Moya (replaced by Oblak), later Cani (replaced by Raul Garcia) & Mandzukic (replaced by Torres). The rest of the team put in an enormous effort attacking & defending keeping the Germans at bay to avoid that they score the valuable away goal. Special mention to Arda Turan who put in a blinder, Griezmann who ran all night & the two defenders Gimenez & Miranda who were solid. In fact, great team effort from the Atletico players.
The match ended, with penalties needed to break the tie & the team (players) that supported the nerves best did better. Atletico missed 2 (Garcia/Koke) of their 5 shots (successful Griezmann, Suarez & Torres) , while goalie Oblak stopped the first German penalty. For Leverkusen, Rolfes & Castro were successful, while Çalhanoglu, Toprak & Va Kiessling missed. Goalie Leno did his best, stopping Koke.
Final score 1 - 0 / 3- 2 (4-3 on aggregate after penalties). Atletico de Madrid eliminates Bayern Leverkusen & moves on in the competition.
