Round 24 kicked off Friday night in Madrid with Getafe hosting RCD Espanyol in their match. The locals managed an important three points winning 2 - 1 & jumping up in the Liga ladder away from the bottom - danger zone. Getafe Coach Sanchez Flores seems to have turned around his team after sitting in the relegation area months back. The goals for Getafe came in the 32nd min through Sarabia & later through Alvaro in the 56th min. Espanyol got their only goal in the 88th min with a "driver" from Arbilla.
The surprise of the round so far with the 1 - 0 victory of Malaga FC over FC Barcelona. The winner came in the 7th min through Juanmi , & from then on Malaga build a "defensive wall". The Barça Coach & players commented post-game that they tried to turn things around but Malaga defended perfectly. Barça Coach Luis Enrique also commented that this was a serious reverse that may have negative consequences in Liga. If rivals Real Madrid win their match against Elche tomorrow, the former will open up a 4 point gaps over Barça while third placed At. Madrid is now just 3 points behind.
Cordoba hosted Valencia CF & lost 1 - 2. The win for Valencia was suffered & they only managed their victory in the 80th min when Piatti scored & in a very lucky manner. Earlier Valencia opened the scoring through Andre Gomes in the 37th min to which Cordoba equalized through Ghilas with a penalty in the 73rd min. Valencia keeps hold on the 4th place on the Liga table.
Authoritative win by Atletico de Madrid 3 - 0 over Almeria. The damage was all done in the first half by the upfront duo Mandzukic-Griezmann. Both players are combining better & are assisting each other to create goal opportunities. The opener was a "doubtful" penalty on Godin which Mandzukic converted in the 12th min. The following two goal came thanks to Antoine Griezmann who scored in the 19th & 28th min.
The big "Galician Region" derby between Deportivo A Coruña & Celta de Vigo ended in a 0 - 2 result in favour to the visitors. Intense & fought out - including a red card to Depor defender Lopo mid 2º half - we saw how Celta was the more effective in taking their chances. The first goal was a counter-attack at the start of the 2º half that Carles scored in the 46th min while Depor was still "cold". The second come in the 82nd min through Larrivey thanks to a defensive mistake. Earlier Riera had the chance to equalize for Deportivo, but as said, Celta was more effective tonight.
