The brutal violence near the streets of the "Vicente Calderon Stadium" finished with numerous injuries, & a Deportivo supporter beaten & then thrown into the nearby river that crosses the city of Madrid & the Atletico de Madrid stadium. The man was rescued 15 min after being thrown & floating in the water with very severe head injuries, hypothermia & in a cardiac-arrest. He was later revived & taken to hospital were he died 5 hours later. The incidents were apparently pre-planned by opposing radical groups who differ not only with Club loyalty but with political views (extremists).
Everyone connected to Spanish Football & society has condemned the actions & the violent events. Mindless & barbaric behaviour of a "few" which has blemished the Sport, but unfortunately springs from a "sick" society in "crisis". An ongoing phenomena seen throughout World Soccer that shocks but contiguously shows its ugly head.
With the above dark & sad background of the terrible pre-match events the Atletico de Madrid vs Deportivo A Coruña match went ahead after a suspension was seriously considered. The final result was a 2 - 0 win for Atletico with a less than menacing Deportivo. The two goals for At. Madrid came from Saul with a 43rd min header & a 55th min Turan Arda goal, who was also brilliant today leading his side.
Sevilla FC hosted Granada & won 5 - 1.Granada attempted to take the initiative with Football that later resulted to be too timid & not effective. Their only goal was a El-Arabi equalizer, but Sevilla opened up the Granada set-up & the goals poured in. This is the order of the goals:
- Bacca 24th min, 1 - 0
- El-Arabi 43rd min (penalty), 1 - 1
- Benega 64th min, 2 - 1
- Bacca 80th min, 3 - 1
- Mbia 89th min, 4 - 1
- Gameiro 92nd min, 5 - 1
Cordoba lost 0 - 2 to Villarreal & continue to hoover at the bottom end of the Liga classification table. Villarreal deserved the win, well earned & with their two goals from Vietto in the 24th min & Uche in the 70th min.
Valencia FC lost 0 - 1 to FC Barcelona in the very last moment in tonights big Liga match. Entertaining game with both teams at a very intense level that created goal chances at both sides, including outstanding goalkeeping saves (Barça Claudio Bravo & Valencia Alves) & with disallowed / missed goals (Barça Luis Suarez & Messi).
Very even encounter the full 90 mins with Valencia putting in an enormous defensive effort that nearly neutralized the Barça forward line fire-power, until the 93rd min when Sergi Busquets fired home a loose ball earlier stopped by Valencia goal Alves. A cliff hanger with Valencia leaving disappointed as they were perhaps punished too harshly. From a Barcelona perspective, great effort to never give in & keep looking for the winner until the end.
