The final result a 2 - 0 victory to Atletico de Madrid over Elche. A very worked & difficult match for Atletico which was taken to their limits in order to get the three points. Elche was organized, determined & created numerous goal opportunities in the first half. They nearly scored but once again as custom the Atletico de Madrid goalkeeper Courtois made two-three incredible saves in a row that saved his team.
Atletico lacked intensity & Coach Simeone made some changes in the second half which lifted the side, Raul Garcia came on for Adrian & added bite upfront. The goal opportunities began to appear & a penalty was called when Raul Garcia was fouled. A doubtful penalty that David Villa missed.
Coach Simeone then gave more oxygen to his side & brought on Sosa for Koke. It was from a Sosa taken corner that the first goal came when defender Miranda headed into the net in th 71st min. Then strangely Elche bounced back to put on the back foot the home side & threatened to equalize. But in the last moment a counter-attack found Diego Costa & on his way to goal was fouled in the box. The referee called penalty & red card to Elche defender Sapuranu. Diego Costa took the penalty in the 90th min & sealed the match with the second goal for his team.
The Atletico objective was reached. They remain Spanish Liga leaders independent of the results in the rest of the matches for another week.
