Atletico de Madrid is having a marvellous season under Coach Simeone. The team is joint leader with FC Barcelona in Liga, semi-finalist in the Spanish Cup & doing very well in Champions League competition. However, there is one lingering doubt, can the actual squad last the distance & the pace for the rest of this season?
The "archilles heel" is the midfield, the creative aspect of play-making. Currently the only "midfield magician" is Turkish International Arda Turan, but when he is missing...? This is when Atletico suffers & thankfully for the moment their excellent defence has been able to cover-up any apparent "weakness".
It has always been the idea of Coach Simeone to cover these deficiencies with a player like Wolfsburg & Brazilian International Diego Ribas, but his signing is a complex affair that is a never ending story of obstacles which has lead the club to find alternatives.
With the "Winter Market Transfer" window rapidly coming to its end the alternatives are sounding with the name of young Argentine & San Lorenzo offensive midfielder Angel Correa. This news comes out of Argentina & their Sports paper "Ole" which goes on to say that Atletico has offered 13M€ for the transfer-signing. What is not clear if its a last minute attempt before the "Winter Market" shuts or a next season incorporation.
What is a NOW operation is the on-loan attempt by Atletico de Madrid to incorporate Valencia CF Argentine International midfielder Ever Benega. The negotiations are in a "stalemate" at the moment because Valencia CF wants to sell not loan out.
Ever Benega had a loan stint at Atletico de Madrid back in season 2008-2009 were he was still young & had his "personal life" not under control. Now Atletico Coach Simeone thinks the Benega could be the "creative piece" he needs to help Arda Turan & give oxygen to the midfield for the hard road still ahead in this season.
Stay tuned for further developments with these two players. There could news at any moment.
