The news has spread like wildfire this evening here in Spain, REAL MADRID has come to an agreement with CHELSEA FC to transfer 32 year old defender & Portuguese International RICARDO CARVALHO for 8M€. The operation is believed to be on the verge of officiality as all parties work to shut all the fine details in the coming hours. The offer to the player is a two year contract with another year as optional.
Real Madrid apparently had this card up its sleeve days ago & was only waiting for todays Inter Milan summit between Maicon & the Italian Club, which ended with a statement that Maicon will stay in Milan, to exercise the option with Chelsea FC. The other "alternative" AC Milan defender Thiago was an option that was too costly with a 25-30M€ price tag that Real Madrid was not prepared to pay, to which some insiders comment that Thiago was just a diversion tactic.
Either way, the signing of Carvalho is full of controversy & has shocked many fans & media specialists. How can the Club justify signing a 32 year old defender when they just "asked" their legendary Captain Raul with 33 years of age to leave? Many bad tongues comment that José Mourinho & his "inside circle" ( including his representative Jorge Mendes ) could have economic interests behind this operation, although this is pure speculation without any solid proof or backing. Other media specialists have even go on further to say that Carvalho will play the function of being Mourinho´s inside man in the dressing room to keep the Coach informed on things, something that if true is bizarre.
Independently, one can suspect that Carvalho comes to be a line-up starter to the detriment of Spanish International RAUL ALBIOL who had a sensational last season & GARAY a solid Argentine International who will be seeing more of the bench. The former will have arguements to be puzzled & even "upset" as this performance last season was considered to be one of the best in his position in the Spanish League.
A transfer story that needs to be made official by Clubs before we can say it is all true that will however bring plenty of debate within the local & International Football circles. I personally cannot understand this decision, although I haven´t the knowledge nor expertise of the Real Madrid Directives or of Coach José Mourinho.

I think this is brilliant. Yes we have Albiol, Pepe and Garay but Pepe got injured and missed all of last season which left us with two centre backs... which lead to Ramos moving to the centre, Arbeloa moving to the right and leaving the liability that is Marcelo on the left.. Mourinho just wants experianced players to fill some voids... like when he brought Lucio to the san siro...
And comparing Raul with Carvalho is just idiotic. Raul is a centre forward and Carvalho is a centre back. You need much more stamina and pace to be a forward... plus we didn't ask him to leave, he has a contract for life, he left on his own accord in order to get more playing time...
I agree with the experience arguement, however not with this signing in particular. Idiotic? All opinions excepted here, even if somewhat bad mannered to continue any further the debate.
Cheers
Hey Striker
The idiot is the annoymous figure. This signing is short term just like Mourinho. Real Madrid have a desperate need to win titles now. There is no long term planning at all everything indicates band aid solutions. I agree, bad signing.
Keep up the good work mate!
I don't think there is anything wrong with making a short term signing when Madrid have already brought in 4 new youngsters. A bit of experience in the back four will go a long way - even if it is for 2 seasons.
I think this is just for depth and experience more than as a starter. He just didn't want to spend too much on a player that costs more just to be on the bench and with less experience. It is a decent signing for that price if he can give us two solid seasons as a squad player. Hopefully his experience would help out Albiol and Garay
