REAL MADRID defeated OLYMPIQUE OF MARSEILLE 1-3 to
secure top spot of Group C & avoid the stronger teams in the next
stage. Apart from an excellent Spanish defence ( Pepe, Ramos, Albiol
& company), backed by a disciplined midfield (Xavi & Lass), it was
Cristiano Ronaldo that unbalanced, surprised, gave spark & scored
two goals.
The French team went out aggresively but were surprised when
CRISTIANO RONALDO fired in a 30m free-kick in the 4th min that
rocked Olympique. From here the French team got really physical
& advanced with all their strenght to equalize & they did in the 11th
min via LUCHO.
Real Madrid regained controlled & had chances - Ronaldo heading the
post, Marcelo missing a shot & Van Der Vaart unlucky with his shots
- but it was the Real defence that stopped it all.
The second half saw Real Madrid take further control & attempt to
dominate & posess the ball. Defender ALBIOL put the Spaniards ahead
in the 60th min & it looked secure until Casillas gave away a penalty
that Olympique midfielder LUCHO missed. This last act brought down
the spirits of the French & RONALDO scored his teams third & his
second in the 80th min after a defensive mistake.
Good result for Madrid, improvement in their play, excellent defensive
game & it is obvious that Cristiano Ronaldo is VITAL for this team
ATLETICO DE MADRID gave its worst image tonight losing 0-3
against OPORTO in their group D match. Thanks to Chelsea FC
drawing 2-2 with Apoel it allowed Atletico to get its place in
the Europa League; really lucky at that!
The Spanish team was simply out played & overrun by a solid
team on a European mission. The goals came from ALVES in the
1st min (says it all), FALCAO in the 13th min & HULK in the 76th
min.
Atletico kiss the Champions League goodbye in a sad manner, but
quite frankly they are not up to the level needed for this competition
& we will need to see if they are as well for the Europa League.
