Good news. The SPANISH U/19 National side needed a point to
qualify for the EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS final phase, & in the
process managed 3 points after defeating GERMANY 1-0 with a
penalty from young Arsenal FC player FRAN MERIDA.
The first half was a cautious affair as both sides were wary of not
allowing the opponent to score a goal. The second half saw Germany
decide to go for a win – as they needed - & they attacked opening
up spaces which allowed Spain to exploit. In one of those incursions
by Spain a penalty was awarded which Merida converted in the 69th
min to put Spain ahead & eventually give his team the victory &
qualification for the "U/19 Euros".
The EURO U/19 Championships will be held in the Ukraine
starting the 21st of July with the Best 8 European U/19 teams
competing for the title – without Germany! The latter may feel
disadvantaged due to the UEFA draw system.
