SPANISH FOOTBALL - LA LIGA 2008 / 2009 - ROUND 25 SUNDAY GAMES RESULTS

Life is funny sometimes as it takes an arch rival to turn suddenly into
your ally & best friend. That´s what happened tonight as Atletico
beat FC Barcelona to put Real Madrid 4 points behind as the latter
shuts the gap & put the pressure
on Barça. As everyone in Spain is
shouting now ..."WE HAVE LIGA"!

Here is a full summary of Sundays Round 25 games.

ATLETICO DE MADRID jumps back into European positions on the
table & does a favour to Real Madrid by defeating in an extraordinary

game 4-3 FC BARCELONA to put the pressure right on the latter.

Before we get too emotional, Atletico won thanks to its two
extraordinary
class forwards upfront - FORLAN & AGUERO -
with grit, pride & preserverance. Atletico has lots of problems
in defence & little midfield distribution power, it was a mystery
why Maniche did not start instead of coming on late in the 2º half
when he
helped turn the game. It was Atletico as a team that won
tonight & it
had little to do with new Coach Abel Resino who has
lots of work ahead if he
is to get this team to fly further. However, a
victory is a victory & in this case it
does´nt matter how but that
it happened.

The game overall was a see-saw affair with FC Barcelona getting

ahead early with an brilliant goal from HENRY in the 18th min &
MESSI in the 29th min, all of which come due to Atletico defensive
mistakes.

However, Atletico pulled out pride, the fighting spirit & DIEGO
FORLAN cracked from outside the box a goal in the 31st min to
lift the
team with hope. Then in the 2ºhalf with Barça feeling the
mental pressure, SERGIO AGUERO equalized in the 56th min to
bring the
house down.

FC Barcelona reacted knowing well that a loss would put Real
Madrid
on their backs & it would fill the weeks ahead with past
ghosts & HENRY scored his second & put Barça again ahead.

But it was´nt over, a foul in the penalty area to Pongolle was
given & FORLAN equalized in the 79th min. Barça suffered some
"wobbles" & AGUERO pounced on a Pujol mistake to score the
winner in the 88th min (see above). A heroic comeback & a great
end to a classic game, Barça now seem to be suffering "ghosts"
from past experience, its now all psychological.
