EUROPEAN SUPER LEAGUE: WILL THIS BE THE FUTURE?

Imagine this scenario, it’s Saturday night & the big game is Milan vs.
Manchester United. The following night it’s Liverpool FC vs. FC Barcelona,
Bayern Munich vs. Real Madrid, Lyon vs. Oporto, Inter vs. Olympiakos, etc.
It’s the European Super League & it would be like this week after week,
running parallel with the local National Leagues ( La Liga, Premier, etc) &
with the UEFA Cup & current Champions League disappearing. There are
many features still to be discussed & negotiated (20 o 22 teams? 4 Groups?)
& it would cause many changes locally for the various Football Associations,

like saturated playing calendars & reducing the Top Leagues locally to 16
teams for example, that would need to be sold locally & well to all the
different Clubs & interest groups ( the Stakeholders).

According to elmundo.es, this is were European Football is heading as Clubs
look to increase further their revenues from TV, publicity, merchandising, etc.
There is a date already on the table 2012-2013.The global economic recession
has given life to this “old” idea as Clubs struggle to keep up with their current
costs (mainly player salaries) & economic studies estimate that a “Euro Super
League” is the only viable model for the future with estimated multiplication
by 10 in profits due to globalization.

Now everyone is waiting to see how UEFA reacts, especially Michel Platani
to this idea, as UEFA has been against it in the past. However, UEFA
perhaps sees the future clearer now & the inevitable need to expand &
increase the revenue base.

What are your thoughts? Who decides who’s in whose out? How? Can
players keep up the rhythm? Is this good for European Football?

What is certain is that there will be a “rat fight” from various groups around
Europe to get into the act & grab their piece of the pie. There is a danger of
converting an elite group & the "rest of group" that will make consensus &
approval a long & hard negotiation road. However, that idea is there & the
it’s a thought that is gaining strength ( politically & economically) as time
goes on.
