CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFIERS 2008: ATLETICO DE MADRID & FC BARCELONA WIN

The Champions League 2008/ 2009 kicked off tonight with two Spanish
teams participating, while the other two will play
tomorrow. The Spanish
contingent could not have got off too a
better start with each winning their
respective games.

ATLETICO DE MADRID went to PSV EINDHOVEN & played
a grand game to win 0-3 with an outstanding SERGIO AGUERO
who scored two goals ( 8thmin & 35th min) to stamp his authority
& let everyone know that he is evolving to become one of World
Football´s great players.

The other good news was that Portugues midfielder MANICHE scored
to regain the lost confidence of his Coach Aguirre & win back his place
on the field.

The only bad news was the muscle torn by Diego Forlan that may well

keep him out of the field for weeks. However, in resumed words, overall
a grand night for Atletico.

FC BARCELONA needed to score & win to shut its critics & gain the
much needed confidence for the future, & they did just that with a
good & comfortable win over Portugues side SPORTING with a
3-1 victory.

RAFEAL MARQUEZ culminated 20mins of "steam rolling" Barça

domination with a headed goal that took them to the end of the 1º half.

The 2º half saw a less dominating Barça but were awarded with a penalty
in the 60th min which SAMUEL ETO´O converted. Sporting exploited
the lapse ( or over confidence ) of Barça to convert a tap in from
TONEL into its 1ºst & only goal, which set in some nerves into the Spanish

side. Then in the 87th min a brillant Iniesta pass saw XAVI tap in the
3ºrd & final Barça goal.

Comfortable & deserved overall win for Barça, with the following names

to note: Messi who was dangerous, outstanding & unlucky not to have
scored; Pique brilliant in defence; Xavi who is currently Europe´s best
midfielder & Iniesta who is pure class.

Tomorrow is Real Madrid & Villareal turn, & be sure to surf into SFS late

night for all the details.
