I will be sad to see Reyes and Baptista go.
Reyes lost the ball alot last season, but i can see that habit being something he can work on (eg Robinho and C.Ronaldo both suffered from this, and still do from time to time).
I like Baptista alot and his style of play, sure he's not a great passer and not the greatest dribbler of the ball (his stepovers look like The Matrix in 'bullet time' slow-mo), however, his ball control is sound, he's intimidating by Spanish standards and I love his commitment and way he makes contact with the ball when shooting.
Overall, I prefer Baptista as a player over Reyes, but I think we need Reyes more this season since he can play comfortably on both sides and we already have reserve strikers.
It's not clear to me who Shuster is going to play on the right with the current squad.
Personally, I'd like to see Robinho there since I think he needs to cross the ball more than he does. Reyes can play there, but may not be in the squad. I saw Higuian there for a couple of games last season, but i prefer him in a support striker or 'in-the-hole' role like Baptista. Raul was tried there once last season and was awful. Who am I missing? Cicinho could step up as a midfielder maybe? I'm not convinced that's a good option.
Currently I'm stumped about this, but interested to know what Shuster will do.
i agree with u evo. i really think Real Madrid should have got Ribery. he is one of the best wingers around. I think the next choice is Quaresma. I guess its all upto the coach to decide
Yep Ribery would have been a great choice

Nice to see people find SFS a perfect choice for publicity.
Cheers
I don't understand how baptista worth 15m euro and huntelaar doesn't
I totaly agree with both evo and zazinho. evo, I epecially identify with your comment about preferring Baptista, but seeing Reyes as more of a necessity. Spot on. However, on the subject of Cicinho, I actualy think he'd be a good option on the right wing, one I've been hoping to see materialize for quite some time. He's really not that strong of a defender, which is why he often took a back seat in 2005 as right fullback. His ball control, pace, and ability to exploit the right line and send remarkably accurate crosses into the box, on the other hand, make him well suited at the wing, and his experience as defender could prove helpful against the counter-attacks that we're bound to see a lot of this season. A lot will depend on how fit he is after his injury, and how able he is to get back in form, but I hope Schuster gives him a chance.
Excellent created forum of debate gentlemen. A real pleasure to read & learn from you guys. Thankyou for making SFS better everyday, its a real privilege
Cheers
I'm wondering what everyone thinks will happen at center midfield, though. I read somewhere that Sneijder is staying with Feyenoord, and Emerson wants out (i hope he gets it). If so, who's going to start next to Diarra?
We all are aware of Guti's inconsistancies, and that Gago is not ready yet (I question if he ever will be). De La Red has had some flashes of talent, and has said he prefers the central mid position - perhaps it's time for him to start? I don't know, but I'm anxious to see what happens.
John,
confirmed that Sneijder will stay at Ajax!
Ajax, right. Not Feyenoord - that's Drenthe, the other young subject of acquisitional debate. Thanks Striker!
(the tidbit about Deco is certainly interesting - I don't want Madrid to poach Barcelona, but Deco could certainly add an important and cohesive element to Real's side!)
Why isn't Gago ready?
When Gago was in Boca he looked better than Mascherano.
Anyone saying Mascherano isn't ready will get laughed at...
Personally, I haven't seen Gago in consistant form since he left Boca. At Madrid he gave up posession too often and looked unwilling to chase down a defender or a ball, opting instead to shrug and look disapointed.
I grant him a keen eye for the field, and think he'd do best for Madrid if he anchored at mid-field, or slightly forward, and worked on distributing the ball, (as he did, for instance, with Argentina against Paraguay in the Copa America), in effect, spreading out the defense and creating space.
I think in time Gago might mature and be able to play such a role (he also has a great shot from outside the box) but at the moment I'm not convinced.
that's a good description for gago, john.
I liked his distributions, and his tackle was improving in Boca before going to spain. Then after some time without playing in Real Madrid he's been dropping back a little. During the Copa he got some playing time and it was notifiable he was a bit more active towards the end.
I think gago will mature into a good player. what people seem not to realize is that players need time to adapt. e.g. Sheva. But as for Real's center mid problems, i really dont like Diarra(too much yellow cards, poor passing) or Emerson(way too slow). i think this season will be De la Red and Gago's. I would like to see them get Fabrigas from Arsenal or Maduro from Ajax.
