SPAIN defeated ARGENTINA
2-1 in tonights friendly match
played in Murcia (Spain).
The win momentary eases the
pressure & the criticism hailed
at the Sapnish national coach
& the players.
However, the scoreline is
decieving as both teams
played slowly & at times
boring, thus not conviencing
anyone of good play.
The Spanish defence is still
questioned & Argentina played
nothing like in the recent
World Cup.
Conclusion - a typical friendly match, were Argentina had nothing
to prove & Spain everything to gain.
The 1º goal of
the game
come from
FC Barcelona´s
midfielder XAVI
HERNANDEZ
in the 32
minute.
Argentina equalized
2 minutes after with
a goal from striker
BILOS in the 34min.
Spain improved somewhat
in the 2º half & managed
to gain a penalty - foul
by Ayala on Iniesta - in
which Valencia CF
striker DAVID VILLA
transformed into goal
in the 62min, giving Spain
the 2-1 lead & the finishing
score
Therefore, breathing space for the Spanish National Squad which has
plenty of work to do & plenty of thinking to do if they wish to improve
& begin winning some "real" games

This game was disappointing in more ways that just what happened on the pitch. Aragonés had a chance to hit back at his critics and put together the sort of display that would have made those calling for him to go eat his words. On the other hand, it could have been a complete débacle and he would have been sacked by the weekend. This would have given Spain time to regroup until their next European qualification matches next March. Instead they are in a sort of limbo (even though the Vatican's going to abolish it ;). The media are still calling for his head, but they have no further ammunition and it looks like we'll have to wait and see whether he can pull Spain out of their present slump and qualify for Euro 2008.
Thanks Gonzalo, excellent roundup of the current situation.
Hope to see you back often
Cheers
