SPANISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE - LA LIGA - ROUND 34 SATURDAY RESULTS

SPANISH FOOTBALL action this Saturday with two games of LA LIGA Round 34 scheduled with the following final scores & goal scorers.

SPANISH FOOTBALL
Real Madrid - Sporting

First placed REAL MADRID hosted last placed REAL SPORTING DE GIJON in a must win match for the home side. After 90 minutes Real Madrid managed a 3 - 1 victory that sets them up for the "clasico" against FC Barcelona next week & puts the latter closer into the 2º Division next season.

However, the scoreline distorts somewhat as Sporting put in an ultra-defensive set up that frustrated Real Madrid all the first half & part of the second half until Gijon Captain Canella was sent of with a red card in the 76th min. Till then Sporting was sticky, awkward & even went ahead first in the 30th min when DE LAS CUEVAS scored a penalty from a Sergio Ramos hand-ball. Real Madrid then "fixed" things in the 37th min when GONZALO HIGUAIN equalized in the 37th min, but for Real a draw was a bad result & a win was vital.

Real Madrid Coach Mourinho reacted half time putting on Benzema ( off Callejon ) & Di Maria ( off Sahin ) to attempt to break the Gijon defensive wall. Just when things were getting complicated for Real, Di Maria found the head of CRISTIANO RONALDO who broke the stalemate in the 74th min. Then with Gijon down to 10 men, KARIM BENZEMA sentenced the match with his 81st min goal. Real Madrid with these 3 goals equalled tonight the Historical Spanish League Goalscoring record in a season of 107 goals held by the 1989/90 season Real Madrid team under Coach Toshack. This will be broken in coming matches.

Real Madrid has Champions League semis duties mid-week against Bayern Munich & the opportunity to secure the LIGA title if they can beat FC Barcelona next Staurday.

SPANISH FOOTBALL
Levante - FC Barcelona

LEVANTE gave FC BARCELONA a run for their money after having them on the ropes up to the 64th min when LIONEL MESSI had to come to the teams rescue & equalize after Levante went ahead in the 23rd min from a penalty converted by BAKERO.

Then controversy again appeared that lifts eyebrows again as FC Barcelona was awarded a penalty that was not & given by the linesman after he judged that young Barcelona winger Cuenca was pushed in the penalty area. LIONEL MESSI then converted in the 72nd min to put Barcelona ahead & allow his team to breathe as elsewise the Liga title was closer in the hands of Real Madrid. Final score 1 - 2

Barça has mid-week Champions League duties in the semis against Chelsea FC & then will attempt to pull back three points from Real Madrid next Saturday in the "clasico" which could decide this seasons Spanish Football Champion.
