Here is how it works. Raul has a contract until 2010, if he wishes to
continue, he will be automatically renewed on a yearly basis if he
manages to play 30 games the season before. Once he decides to retire
or does not make the 30 games, he will be slotted into the Real Madrid

Raúl will be 35 in 2011 and Casillas will be 36. These are not unusual ages for players to consider retirement at and there is a feeling that the club is "rewarding" them for services rendered (it's a good PR stunt for Calderón & Co.). The automatic extension depends on their playing 30 games per season, which is not unreasonable, if they can still perform at the right level.
I think it's a great one. What better way to honor a great player than to essentially sign him up for life.
However, what happens if Iker starts to slip up and doesn't play well oh say around 31ish. Then hes relegated to sitting on the bench till he retires.
