The last game of Round 25 of the Spanish Liga was played Monday night with RCD Espanyol going down 1 - 2 to Villarreal which suffered for their victory. It was a heart stopper right up to the last moment as Villarreal goalkeeper Asenjo saved a penalty in the 91st min to assure the 3 points to his team. Asenjo became the hero of the night & keeps Villarreal thinking about the possibility of getting into the Champions League positions of the Liga classification ladder. Villarreal sits in 5th position & has Athletic Club Bilbao 4 points away which is sitting in the 4th position.
The match started with RCD Espanyol looking good & dominating the situation. But it was Villarreal that scored first against the grain with a 35th min goal from Moi Gomez. This shook the home side which suffered a serious lapse & Villarreal went further ahead in the 49th min with a goal from Perbet.
To the credit of Espanyol they lifted & put Villarreal on the back foot managing to score in the 76th min through Jhon Cordoba. It looked as if Espanyol would manage to turn things around & get the equalizer, & they were given a penalty when Villarreal player Gabriel hand-balled in the area. However, the Villarreal goalie stopped the penalty shot by Sergio Sanchez which gave his team the victory.
Dramatic stuff towards the end in an entertaining game of Spanish Football.
