The last 5 matches of Spanish Football Liga Round 17 were played today before the competition goes into its Christmas Break. Plenty of action with the following final results - scores & all the goalscorers.

RCD Espanyol played at noon & managed some needed 3 points with a deserved 4 - 2 win over bottom placed side Valladolid. Entertaining match with Espanyol dominating except the final 15 mins which saw Valladolid attempt to win some pride & get some goals. The scoring occurred in the following manner:
  • Sergio Garcia ( penalty ) 6th min, 1 - 0
  • Stuani 36th min , 2 - 0
  • Victor Sanchez 68th min, 3 - 0
  • Stuani 70th min , 4 - 0
  • Javi Garcia 75th min , 4 - 1
  • Victor 89th min , 4 - 2

Getafe hosted FC Barcelona without stars Messi, Neymar & Xavi, while the visitors wanted to win & thus go onto their Xmas break as leaders of Liga. In the end, after an initial scare, FC Barcelona managed to defeat the Madrid team 2 - 5 with a HAT TRICK from Pedro included.

Getafe started well exploiting some Barça defensive mix-ups & scoring two goals - Escudero 10th min & Lisandro 15th min - early in the match. It looked like we could be in for a surprise when FC Barcelona forward Pedro exploded onto the scene with three straight goals to get a HAT - TRICK in 8 minutes - 35th min, 41st min & 43rd min. A remarkable turnaround that demoralized Getafe which never recovered.

In the second half Barcelona withstood some Getafe attacks but controlled affairs adding two more goals that came from Cesc Fabregas in the 67th min & 72nd min. Barça retakes the Spanish Liga classification leadership from Atletico de Madrid with their victory.

Athletic Club Bilbao are aiming high & playing Football to do so after defeating Madrid Club Rayo Vallecano 2 - 1 with latter second last on the Liga table. Bilbao got ahead first with a San Jose goal in the 30th min but Rayo were feeling strong & put up a good show being rewarded with an equalizer in the 61st min from Bueno. However, Bilbao put things back into place with a Mikel Rico goal in the 66th min that was deserved as Bilbao had missed some clear chances earlier. Athletic Club currently sits in Champions League table positions.

Valencia CF is going through a rough patch on the field & in the Club offices. Today President Amadeo Salvo announced that billionaire Singapore businessman Peter Lim will make an offer for the debt ridden Club. On the field tonight they hosted Real Madrid which had to win to maintain its chase with Atletico de Madrid & FC Barcelona in the Liga Title race, things nearly turned out bad for the visitors which had to work to their limits & found some luck to win 2 - 3

The first half was even as both sides were not shining but getting through with their respective individual talents. Real Madrid went ahead first with a great curver from Di Maria in the 28th min but Valencia reacted quickly with a Piatti equalizer in the 34th min. Real Madrid then went again ahead with a Cristiano Ronaldo header in the 39th min from a Di Maria pass.

In the second half Real Madrid suffered the 45 mins & Valencia CF equalized with a Mathieu header in the 62nd min that brought plenty of nerves into the Real Madrid side as they saw how the match was slipping away from them. Valencia attacked & kept on creating chances which forced Real Madrid Coach Ancelotti to find alternatives. Young Jese came on for Isco to find more attacking movements & it paid off when Jese scored in the 81st min. From here Real Madrid held on calling for the end of time to get the three points.

Good game from Valencia which could have won the match had they been effective & they pushed Real Madrid to the limits.

Bottom Liga ladder teams Celta de Vigo & Osasuna fought it out for a 1 - 1 draw. Chances to bought teams which paid for not being effective & they eventually cancelled each other out. The opening goal came from Armenteros for Osasuna in the 17th min & the equalizer came for Celta de Vigo with an own goal from Lolo in the 34th min. Shared points.
