Lleida lost 1 - 2 to Real Betis. The visitors reacted after the Club sacked early in the week their Coach Pepe Mel. New Coach Garrido managed to get the squad focused & the team pulled off an important moral boosting 1ºst leg away victory. The goals for Betis came in the 26th min via Verdu ( penalty ) & later Molina in the 42nd min. Lleida got their only goal thanks to Pere Milla in the 58th min which keeps the door open for his team in the 2º leg match. Betis had also missed a penalty before they opened the scoreline.
Algeciras drew 1 - 1 against Real Sociedad & could have won the match had they been more accurate. Not a good game from the Liga Club Real Sociedad at all which went ahead first with a 58th min Griezmann goal. However, the home side were rewarded for their overall good Football with a 64th min equalizer from Alfaro. Algeciras deserved more.
Top game between two Liga Clubs that also entertained. Villarreal drew 2 - 2 with Elche & did so with a last minute goal. Elche would be disappointed as they let the victory slip to which Villarreal sighed relief. The goals came in the following order:
- Giovani - 21 st min - 1 - 0
- Pelegrin - 61st min - 1 - 1
- Y.Boakye - 66th min - 1 - 2
- J.Aquino - 94th min - 2 - 2
The situation is even & will be decided in the return 2º leg match.
Racing de Santander lost 0 - 1 to Sevilla FC but had the visitors on the ropes most towards the latter part of the match. Sevilla FC got ahead in the 5th min with a Jairo goal. In the 53rd min Sevilla FC went down 10 men when Coke got a red card this gave Racing the advantage & they almost managed to turn the match around. Sevilla FC held onto their precious away goal. A real Spanish Cup type of game & Football.
2ºB Division Club Cartagena hosted FC Barcelona & lost 1 - 4. FC Barcelona went into this game without Pique, Xavi, Iniesta & Neymar who stayed on the bench. Cartagena started strong & very intense as they obviously were super motivated & put Barça on the back foot early. The visitors - Barça - looked bad & worst in defence & were punished with a Cartagena goal in the 17th min from Fernando who will never forget the moment.
Barça was rattled but managed to pull out of themselves pride & lifted thereafter to the relief of Coach Martino. Pedro & Cesc Fabregas along with youngster Sergi Roberto took hold of the situation, steadied the team & put them on the correct course. Pedro equalized in the 39th min, Cesc Fabregas put Barça ahead in the 43rd min, Pedro brilliantly got the teams third in the 75th min & substitute & youngster Dongou scored the fourth in the 90th min
Cartagena ran out of steam & ended up putting the whole team into defensive duties as Barça brushed off "possible ghosts" & set course for victory. Said this Barça cannot be happy with their Football tonight considering the circumstances.
Valladolid drew 0 - 0 with Madrid Club Rayo Vallecano after both teams had their share of chances but failed to convert. Perhaps both were thinking in settling the tie in the return leg & thus were conservative. Who knows, it may have been that luck was elsewhere for both in tonights encounter.
