FIFA GOLDEN BALL | WHEN WILL SPANISH FOOTBALL WIN?

While we congratulate the 4th straight & historic FIFA GOLDEN BALL AWARD for Lionel Messi, from a Spanish Football perspective once again it was close yet so far away. The last & only Spanish Football Player to win the Golden Ball was Luis Suarez when with FC Barcelona. Yesterday Andres Iniesta was a the nations hope & candidate & he finished third & in 2010 Iniesta while winning the World Cup Final & all the rest, his team-mate Messi took the prize.

More Spanish Football Players come to mind that came close & never won an Award that more then possibly they deserved to win. This is the nature of the Golden Ball Award, apart that there can only be one winner, there have been serious accusations of third party interests in play, economical being in most cases.

The name of ex-REAL MADRID player RAUL GONZALEZ comes immediately to mind. A player that should have won at least one Golden Ball that never came in 2001 when he was "overtaken" surprisingly by Michael Owen. Cruel indeed as time later proved - with all respects to Owen - as the Englishman the following year began to disappear gradually from the elite scene.

But there are more grand players that have not been awarded the maximum individual prize in World Soccer. Take a look at this list of greats: Puskas, Bobby Moore, Dino Zoff, Kahn, Buffon, CafĂș, Baresi, Maldini, Gerrard, Snejder, Thierry Henry, Xavi Hernandez, Casillas & Del Piero.

When will a Spanish player win the FIFA Golden Ball? Stay tuned!
