ENZO ZIDANE | THE DILEMMA : PLAY FOR SPAIN OR PLAY FOR FRANCE?

ENZO ZIDANE is the 15 year old son of World Football French Legend ZINEDINE ZIDANE & is currently lifting eyebrows here in the REAL MADRID junior team & with Spanish Football observers. The youngster has apparently inherited the style & playing finesse of his father & may soon make a serious jump in level in his early career which calls for a mayor decision.

Enzo was born in France in 1995 & also has a Spanish passport thanks to his mother, both her parents are Spanish from El Chive town in the region of Almeria in Southern Spain. The Spanish Football Authorities are thinking in calling up young Enzo for the Spanish U 16 National Team, something that needs serious thought because if he decides to take the invitation the player will shut the door to the French National side. Something similar occured with FC Barcelona player Bojan Krkic who decided in favour of Spain over Serbia.

Apparently the final decision will be taken up & made on behalf of Enzo by his father Zinedine. Which country will they choose?

Following on from Mikel Artera's potential inclusion in the England national team, I was under the impression that if a player holds dual nationality during youth level it is still open to the player which nation they decide to play for until they play in a senior team international. This is the case with Arteta as although he played for the Spanish youth teams, he never played for the main Spanish side (Bojan has been given his senior international cap) prompting speculation that he may be eligible to apply for UK citizenship and therefore play for England, however it became apparent that FIFA rules state dual nationality must be held at the time of the players youth internationals for them to be eligible for another country. As such, until he plays for the senior team Enzo may also play for France. (Correct me if I am wrong, I greatly appreciate your blog and visit on a daily basis!)

Tomas,

Excellent observation & you put me in doubt. What could be the case is that if the youngster does play for Spain, that France would have to make a sort of "counter-offer" which would force the player to make a public choice. I believe that Bojan played for Spain in the jr levels & Serbia did not force the issue until it became clear that he was about to jump to the A side.

Having said this, do not take my words as the be all. You could - & it sounds - that your exposition has much more weight & sounds the correct.

Perhaps another reader could further clear this issue.

Thanks for sharing your Football wisdom
Cheers!
